It was with the Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, George Clinton and all those crazy All-Stars, A Tribe Called Quest and a few others in there!
FAVORITE BAND OF ALL-TIME:
Beastie Boys, Tool, and Sublime.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
My uncle was a radio DJ for over 25 years using the names of Jonathan Stone and Johnny Dark while working at the legendary CKLW, WAKY, WGST, 93X in Atlanta, and a few others. He has passed away, and I still have a ton of his old radio air checks. He did the voices while in Atlanta for Coca Cola, Six Flags, and many others. So I have always been around music in my family. While I was attending the University of Florida getting my degree, I decided to walk up to the offices at WRUF-FM and the rest is history.
2. How did The Roach Motel originate?
When I became a night jock at WRXW-FM in Jackson, MS the PD at the time wanted a single name for the night jock. We decided on Roach after consulting the Rolling Stone and in print it just jumped out at us! So after about two months using this name on air, I was watching Leno one night while on-air (shame) and good ol Jay was talking about being kicked out of some casino suite and had to "stay at some Roach Motel". It hit me immediately, and I have called the show The Roach Motel ever since!
3. How would you describe The Roach Motel Show?
My show is edgy and phone intensive. The University of Arkansas is here so most of those Razorbacks students and the older demographic really help me out with crazy phone calls. I hear WOOOO PIG SOOOIE quite often in my ears! It never seems to be a dull day, I try to focus on the music, current events, use my own pimptastic humor, and the response has been overwhelming! Many people don't realize that the biggest corporation in the WORLD is right next door in the town of Bentonville. YES, you guessed it, WAL-MART! So there is an influx of growth and all kinds of people moving here to this city. I believe this market will be in the top 100 within in two years, so The Roach Motel plans to expand and cover the city, while crushing the competition. I enjoy doing that; it drives me. You can also find various strippers, and wild listeners partying at The Roach Motel on a regular basis. Good times. It you want more details, visit me on the web at: http://www.myspace.com/RoachMotel.
4. How do you prepare for your show each afternoon?
I use a variety of Prep Services such at Frostbytes, The Complete Sheet, industry and band websites. Then the magic happens.
5. What is your biggest challenge each day on-air?
Trying to not get distracted by everyday things and those pesky sales people. I only give them a hard time when they aren't out selling me and making me some dough! I am quite focused and know what I want as far as my show is concerned. It is quite easy to be distracted so I try to focus on what I want, and not on what I don't want. Steering negative energy away from me helps with this challenge of distraction. I don't want to distract people, I want to attract people. Through the laws of attraction, people listen.
6. What do you like best about working at KXNA?
We have the freedom to do what we want on our show, and the listeners love it! It is non-corporate here so we are more of a family than co-workers. We have numerous broadcasts out on the town and we just have fun and work as a team. That's what it's all about. I work hard for the station, and the management works hard for us.
7. What would surprise people most about the station?
I think the fact that we have a small staff and sound BIG! People would be amazed of all the hats we have to wear around here. As far as listeners, I think they would be most surprised by the huge acts we plan on bringing here to Fayetteville for the first time ever!
8. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without ___________?
COFFEE! I know this might seem trivial...but hey I need a wake me up in the morning that is legal
9. Biggest career highlight?
Having Porn Star Briana Banks sitting in my lap while I was broadcasting live at a strip club! It's tough to top that I think.
10. What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
I would be doing some sort of Sports Broadcasting, Music and Sports Journalism as well. People say I have a face for TV, so maybe the career paths would change down the road for the right amount of coin!
Bonus Questions
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy going to concerts, entertaining friends, throwing parties at The Roach Motel (you should stop by sometime), selling sports collectibles and memorabilia on eBay, going to the movies, white water rafting, chillin at the casinos, and anything else that creates excitement and fun! Gotta run...various women are calling my cell.
