NAME:BoomerPOSITION:MD/Afternoon DriveSTATION:KKPL - 99.9 The PointMARKET:Fort Collins (#126)COMPANY:RegentBORN:1979RAISED:Cody, WY
LAST NON-INDUSTRY JOB:
Back in college I waited tables at a Tapas restaurant, which sounds like "topless" out loud to a lot of people. Good times. Good times.
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I will be extremely brief. This is my first gig out of college radio.
FIRST RECORD EVER PURCHASED:
Nirvana - Nevermind. They were called cassettes in my day.
FIRST CONCERT:
I can't lie, it was Boys II Men, in Billings MT, the big city.
FAVORITE BANDS OF ALL-TIME:
I have yet to listen to Wyld Stallions, but I hear they will change things... For now how about albums that I'll always come back to? Saves The Day "Stay What You Are," Postal Service "Give Up," I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Rise Against, and Nina Simone was bitchin'. Right now I heart to Bloc Party, LCD Soundsystem, and Stereophonics.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
My high school radio station: KYDZ get it? ("Kids" in case you didn't get it). I was 15 and playing that Led Zeppelin dude, man, he was good. I also discovered the Beatles there, and when you grow up in Cody, WY and discover life outside of Country and Ultimate Dance Party '95, '96 & '97, it's an amazing day, you start to wonder what else is there? It would be much later that I discovered Democrats.
2. What do you like best about your job?
I like having an opinion that matters. Getting bands on that I believe in and that I know our listeners will like.
3. How are you sorting through all the new music? What is your method to the madness?
I like to rip open the envelopes in the studio and play the CD while I'm trying to read whatever paper came with it that I shredded while opening it. I listen to everything, as soon as I can.
4. What kind of music are you a sucker for?
I read this somewhere once: There is no such thing as a guilty pleasure with music. You like what you like and you shouldn't be ashamed, who cares what other people think? When you work with music snobs this can be intimidating, but I'll take anything with a keytar in it any day.
5. Why did the Point switch from AAA to Alternative?
Well Planet Radio, which was the Point before the Point was the Point, got bought by Regent, they said something about making money and how they were really into that idea and blah blah blah... Here's what I think happened see Planet Radio was never truly AAA, it was more like AAAlternative, we had to drop 2 A's because nobody likes made-up words, look what happened to the keytar.
6. What would surprise people most about the station?
That 80% of the jocks came from KCSU, the college station in town, including myself. It's still kind of like college here, except with a 401K option.
7. Biggest career highlight?
So far getting reporting status, which just happened for us. I was the nerdy girl in school, then I got a makeover and all the boys are asking me out like in the '89 Tony Danza classic "She's Out of Control." But really it's something everyone here has been working hard for during the 3 years of our station's existence, whether it was the Planet or the Point.
8. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _____________?
Blinking, I mean, I've never even tried.
9. If you could work at any radio station, which one would it be and why?
Live 105, I did Bay 2 Breakers last year. Stayed with friends, and all I wanted to do was listen to the radio. Wherever we went I made sure the radio was always on and on 105.3. I love the playlist so much. I want to marry it.
10. If you wanted to completely change careers today, what would you do?
Don't laugh, I would be a cowgirl. Live the simple life in Northwestern Wyoming, or Montana, maybe Idaho, I hear it's nice too. I'd get satellite radio, of course, I'm not a hater.
Bonus Questions
What do you like to do for fun?
I like snowboarding, drinking Guinness responsibly, and eating steak rare.
Where did the name Boomer come from?
I fall down sometimes, a lot. I hate that being accident-prone is trendy, every actress says she is just a terrible klutz and isn't that charming? Although I'm not the first and only Boomer so why am I talking?
