BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started out as a promotions intern at X103.9 (revamped Edge Station) in Aug 2011. When 103.9 flipped formats, I stuck with them and moved up to producing "Mornings with Monty" until March of 2013. I then moved over to 98KUPD and started all over again from promotions to on air weekends to filling in for the on-air staff. When rock station 93.3 KDKB flipped to ALT AZ 93.3 in Sept. 2014, Trip Reeb and Nancy Stevens hired me as first voice for the station until more staff was hired later in March of 2015. From there I worked nights until Nov. 2016, where I moved to middays, then just recently moved to my own morning show as of April 2017.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
Oddly enough, the movie Batman Forever. My mom had won us tickets from my fave radio station and I got to meet the DJs. In my 8 year old mind, these people were soooo cool! I wanted to be that cool. I'm still working on the cool part...
2. After working at KDKB in its previous incarnation, what made you the perfect fit to become the voice of the station when Alt AZ 93.3 signed on in 2014?
I'd like to think it's because I grew up in the valley, LOVE the music and I fit the demographic, but it's probably because I was their only option :-D
3. Tell us about your move to mornings and how would you describe The Mo Show.
The move to mornings has been on my radar since starting in radio back in 2011. The fact that I'm now doing it is unbelievable, but I've got a lot of work ahead of me. There's a rainbow road I'm paving for all of us here at ALT to ride, it's kinda like Mario Kart's rainbow road, minus the blue shells.
4. You have been described as a colorful, engaging, and quirky personality. In fact, your bio states: I keep my hair, big, bright, and colorful... kinda like my personality. Can you elaborate?
Well, I really enjoy having multicolored hair. Currently it's this unicorn pink and purple mix; to me it reminds me of keeping a colorful lifestyle. It's also a huge convo starter which is great, because I get to engage people with random conversation.
5. How are you a social media whore?
I love being all over social media and I practically do it for free ;-D
6. What is your show prep routine?
My show prep routine is really an all-day thing. Since I'm such a social media whore, I'm constantly scrolling through the internet saving stories and watching different videos that come through. I save all that content for the following day to talk about on the show and share with everyone on the socials.
7. What's it like working for Trip Reeb and Nancy Stevens?
It's surreal to work with Nancy and Trip, considering they're both legendary to me. Growing up in Arizona, I was listening to The Edge (which Nancy ran). It was one of my favorite stations because of the passion behind it. To this day, Nancy is still passionate about radio and developing her team all while being one of the best people in my world. Trip Reeb has been one of my biggest supporters since 2014. It blew my mind that the same guy that was a part of hiring Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Carolla and so many others on KROQ, is now in my corner fighting for me to do well. I couldn't ask for a better support system between the two. They just wanna see me succeed and I love it.
8. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Spare concert tickets are a plus but the most rewarding thing out of all of it, are the listeners. I have fun BS'ing with everyone and hearing their stories.
9. Who is your favorite on-air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
I have two faves right now: John Holmberg from 98 KUPD and Gregr from 107.7 The End in Seattle. I worked on Holmberg's show for about a year while at KUPD, going out and doing events in the morning with one of the other hosts. I learned so much from just listening and watching his show in person. The guy is insanely talented and to watch him work, was like watching a mad scientist complete the impossible. I've never met Gregr at The End in Seattle but I loved tuning into his one man morning show. Great delivery, we're into a lot of the same things and he's really good at his own craft/brand.
10. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Burping. Loud. Like Booger from Revenge Of The Nerds! I may have a problem, still looking into it.
