10 Questions with ... Menace

Have an opinion? Add your comment below. We don't make it about ourselves. It's all about the listeners. Nothing makes me want to puke in my mouth more than seeing a jocks feed and it's nothing but selfies. Listeners know what you look like because they are already following you. They follow you because you have a cool job. They want an inside look at your experiences and the people you meet along the way. If you don't offer more than selfies your audience is less likely to become invested in you

BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started in 1998 at KYLD/San Francisco as an intern for Big Von who is now afternoon drive at KMEL. That opened the door for me to join The Dog House morning show with JV & Elvis on Wild 94.9. After that I worked at FREE FM which led me to becoming a part of The Woody Show morning show on KITS (LIVE 105). 16 years of radio in my hometown was awesome but I couldn't turn down the opportunity to work in Los Angeles.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
When I was teenager skateboarding with my friends I was always videotaping our tricks. I later learned how to edit video and interned at a local TV station producing shows for anyone and everyone. One week out of high school I got a call to follow some radio DJs around with a camera. After that, I was hooked.
2. When did you meet Woody and how did you become part of the morning show?
JV and Elvis subbed in for Adam Carolla at FREE FM in San Francisco before they left for New York. I stayed behind working overnights board oping and doing some on-air work on the weekends as a co-host. When I got off work doing overnights I would listen to The Woody Show. I really liked what Woody was doing so I'd look for him in the halls before he started his shift. I would share ideas and offered up help in a few areas. He later brought me on board to the join show.
3. Explain your role as co-host on The Woody Show.
I wish we could just show up, turn on a mic and read show prep. But we can't live that way. Every single person on the show is a producer and we're constantly working on collecting content. On top of that, I use social media for 24/7marketing of the show.
4. How would you describe your on-air style?
I wait for the perfect opportunity for a funny one liner and stumble through the rest.
5. What is your favorite part of the show?
That the show isn't forced. We weren't put together randomly by a company and told to make magic happen. Woody built a team that are friends in real life.
6. You're the social media meister for The Woody Show. What is your social strategy for connecting with your listeners?
We don't make it about ourselves. It's all about the listeners. Nothing makes me want to puke in my mouth more than seeing a jocks feed and it's nothing but selfies. Listeners know what you look like because they are already following you. They follow you because you have a cool job. They want an inside look at your experiences and the people you meet along the way. If you don't offer more than selfies your audience is less likely to become invested in you.
7. Last year, Woody told me, "Menace keeps the show going after the show." Explain.
To many people's dismay, I'm always on my phone looking for content to share with listeners - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
8. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Doing something fun outside of work. No matter what it is.
9. What would surprise people most about you?
I'm always down to help.
10. Who is your favorite on-air personality not on your staff and why do you like them?
Howard Stern for his take on news and interviews.
Bonus Questions
What are weekends like for you?

What are your hobbies?
Learning about new tech and collecting sneakers.
First record ever purchased?
DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince "Homebase"
First concert?
LIVE 105's BFD in 1998 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre.
