BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Besides a short internship at KRWC in Buffalo, MN, my entire radio career has been at Mid-West Family Broadcasting in Madison, WI.
1. How did you first become interested in radio?
Growing up, my dad ALWAYS had a radio on in the house. I listened to Terri Traen on KQRS and to Tawn Mastrey on KXXR every day in high school. When I started going to concerts and saw Tawn side stage or doing stage intros I decided to change my career goals to radio so I could be a part of the music.
2. Congrats on your recent promotion to APD at WRIS (106.7 The Resistance). You've spent the past 10 years working at Active Rock WJJO and Randy Hawke mentioned that you helped construct 106.7 The Resistance from the ground up. Tell us about your involvement with The Resistance and your new responsibilities.
I was able to be a part of The Resistance from the very beginning building clocks, picking songs, hours of importing audio, and all that fun stuff! Seeing how much goes into making a brand new station run gave me the chance to have my hands in everything a little bit. Our staff is still small so I'm handling most of the programming, promotions, and I'm on the air weeknights from 7pm-midnight.
3. Give us the 411 on the evolution of The Resistance. How the station positioned musically and what is most important to you when deciding what new music to play?
Madison needed an alternative outlet. The most important thing is always providing Madison with the music they want to hear. We're fortunate to work for a great company that has stations in nearly every format so The Resistance can really stay alternative without having to spread itself too thin to cover so much ground.
4. What's it like working with Randy Hawke?
Awesome. I've deleted at least a dozen smart-ass answers, but seriously, his knowledge and experience in the business is an awesome learning tool for me. And he makes really good lasagna.
5. How has The Resistance grown in its first year on-air?
We've gotten a much better feel for what works here and what doesn't. That makes it easier for us to take some risks but also to make sure we're staying true to what our community has come to know from us.
6. You are also the Metal MD at WJJO and host the Overdrive. What is your favorite part of your job?
My personal musical taste is extremely broad so I love that every work day is full of music from The Interrupters to Carnifex. You never really know what you're going to hear when you walk past my desk.
7. What is a typical workday like for you?
A typical work day is full of scheduling music, meetings with the other programming and promotional teams, promo plans, and my air shifts.
8. What do you like best about living in Madison?
The Capitol Square: There are so many different kinds of bars, restaurants, music venues, and activities that happen all year round. The people are pretty cool too.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
A little help from my friends.
10. What would surprise people most about you?
I was born with a cleft palate and hearing impaired. Doctors told my parents I'd never hear or speak correctly. Look at me now, doc!
Bonus Questions
How often do you get back home to Minnesota and what are your top priorities when you go come?
I go back home every couple months for at least a day or two. Seeing my family is always the top priority, but I love catching a Wild game or a concert in Minneapolis from time to time.
What are weekends like for you?
In the rare event that I don't have a concert or event to attend on the weekend, I usually spend them meal planning for the week, cleaning, and finally catching up on all the chores/errands I didn't get to during the week.
What are your hobbies?
Playing cards with my husband, cooking, and spending time with my brothers.
First record ever purchased?
Speaking of my brothers... my older brother said he was my guardian when I was 13 so I could buy my first 4 albums: The Offspring "Smash", Limp Bizkit "Three Dollar Bill, Y'all", Korn "Follow The Leader", and Eve 6 "Eve 6."
First concert?
Third Eye Blind & The BoDeans at The Minnesota State Fair in 1998
Favorite band of all-time?
Oh man. I can't pick just one! Today it's a 3-way tie between Rise Against, Slipknot, and Dropkick Murphys. It'll be different tomorrow.
Anything else you would like to add?
Shout out to Ski, Kristi, Bonnie, and Biatch. I wouldn't have made it this long without the women in our office. We might be loud and offensive, but we sure have fun.
