BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Started as an intern at 94.3 KILO in 2002. Moved into part-time weekend mornings. Relocated to Phoenix where I jumped on as a Promo Assistant at 98 KUPD and then became Promo Coordinator. My next stop was Promo Director/Mornings for Manhattan Broadcasting in Manhattan, KS. Eventually became PD at KROCK until I came back to KILO as MD/Middays in 2015 and now PD for RXP as well.
1. You first started working in Colorado Springs as a part-timer at KILO almost 20 years ago and have spent a large chunk of your career at 101.5 K-Rock in Manhattan, Kansas. Why did you decide to return to KILO in 2015?
I would have been an idiot to turn down the opportunity to step into the MD title and work alongside Ross Ford and a talented staff at KILO/RXP. Bonus is living in Colorado Springs again. It's an amazing beautiful city that has always held a special place in my heart.
2. What led to you adding PD duties at KRXP this year?
My bosses and passion for the format.
3. You've spent your entire career working in Rock Radio. How does it feel to be in the Alternative format now?
It feels natural. I guess you could say I'm bi (format).
4. Give us the 411 on KRXP. How is the station positioned musically and what is most important to you when deciding what new music to play?
RXP has been THE Alternative in Colorado Springs and Southern Colorado since 2008. RXP's position is to serve the community and deliver the best in alternative music. We love that we've been able to support the local music scene and be a part of the Colorado Springs music community all these years. New music decisions are a team effort.
5. How would you describe yourself as a programmer?
I've never thought that I have a "style". In theory RXP is delivering an experience that's appealing to the listener and our market as a whole. We have a very dedicated audience that has become attached to the RXP sound and I along with Chris Austin (MD) and our on-air staff feel committed to making sure it all comes together for them. I guess I'm definitely not conventional.
6. KRXP may be leading the format in female on-air talent. You have a new morning host and night jock since taking over as PD. Explain.
I'll answer this with a question: Was this ever asked of all male stations?
7. What is your favorite part of your job?
When promotions are successful and my staff is proud of their hard work. That makes me happy.
8. What do you like best about living in Colorado Springs?
All four seasons in one day, a killer music scene, it's close to my hometown and people/dogs.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Coffee, burritos, and music.
10. What may surprise people most about you?
Married with four adult children. Shocking.
