BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
WIQB/Ann Arbor to KDBN (93.3 The Bone)/Dallas to KPUS/Corpus Christi to KYRK (106-5 The Shark). I've pretty much taken advantages of some good opportunities and learned as much as I could along the way.
1. How did you first become interested in radio?
Well, I was interested in radio since early High School years. Growing up in Detroit, I was influenced by some of the best talent in the world. John O'Leary, Bob Bauer, Ken Calvert, Karen Savelly and many more were people I listened to every day. Ernie Harwell was one of my broadcasting heroes too. I would listen to Detroit Tigers baseball games on the radio every night in the summer. They were like family to me hahaha and I knew that's what I wanted to do. I felt like I belonged.
2. Congrats on taking over PD duties of The Shark. You've been at the station for 9 years, so you know the Corpus Christi market really well. You mentioned adjusting the music balance. How much will the station change?
I'll keep the core of the station together but go in a more edgy direction. I'm also gonna sprinkle in some bands like Iration, The Expendables, Rebelution, Ballyhoo, Tribal Seeds, etc. Third Coast sound for a Third Coast city!
3. Give us the 411 on 106-5 The Shark and what is most important to you when deciding what new music to play?
I wanna play what the listeners wanna hear, but also do what I feel fits best in the market and community. Being involved with the community/lifestyle and the music, art, and food scenes is something I consider an essential part of what I do. I find it's easier when you know who the listeners are and what they want.
4. How would you describe yourself as a programmer?
Someone who wants to be as live and local as possible. Forward thinking. Also, innovative in ways I can't discuss just yet. I wanna have fun, evolve, and do new things on a consistent basis. I mean, we're on the coast, what's not fun about that?
5. What makes the station unique?
We truly are a local and independent radio station and really the first ever true Alternative station in the market.
6. What is your favorite part of your job?
Programming the radio station; talking with record reps, finding and playing new music, being involved with the shows, and supporting the community we're a part of.
7. What is The Shark been doing to help the community during COVID-19?
We have just 2 people working with this going on so we do our best to get the PSAs out, let the listeners know what's going on and how they can help. And we also want them to know we're right there with them. I hope that everyone who reads this is safe and healthy. We'll be back... better than ever!
8. What do you like best about living in Corpus Christi?
The weather, living on the coast, the people, the food, and the fact that there's so much to do down here.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
A few things: time to myself to stay focused, stimulating conversation, and, of course, some good music.
10. What would surprise people most about you?
My cooking skills (for those who don't know me). My passion for food and cooking is pretty intense. BAAAAM!!!
