TITLE:APD/MDSTATION:KFTEMARKET:Lafayette, LACOMPANY:Regent BroadcastingBORN:April 30, 1983RAISED:Lafayette, LA
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
After stints at Target and Blockbuster, I was offered a part-time position here at Regent Broadcasting when I was 19 and worked my way up from there. I started my full-time gig at Planet Radio doing nights, while attending school. After graduation I moved to middays, and now I do afternoons and do the whole music director thing.
LAST NON-INDUSTRY JOB:
Blockbuster
FIRST RECORD EVER PURCHASED:
I don't remember the first album I ever purchased, but I do remember the first parental advisory album that I got. I conned my mother into buying the self-titled Sublime album for me.
FIRST CONCERT:
My first concert was the Smashing Pumpkins and Garbage.
FAVORITE BAND OF ALL-TIME:
Silverchair for sure. They were good when they were 15 year old kids copying their idols, and they've gotten better and better. They're now milestones ahead of what they used to be, and in my opinion ahead of many other bands out there. Daniel Johns is a genius.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
My father is friends with several people that I now work with. I used to come around the stations when I was a kid, and seeing it all just blew my mind. Ever since then I wanted to be able to press a button or say a word that thousands of people would hear. Oh, and I wanted one of those fancy polo staff shirts!
2. What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
I started listening to KFTE when it signed on 12 years ago.
3. What's one thing that would surprise many people to learn about you?
I have a thing for biographies, especially about serial killers, gangsters, the mafia, etc. Those kinds of people just intrigue me.
4. What part of your job do you like best? Least?
The best part is that I have fun everyday that I come to work. I never despise coming to work. There's something new everyday. My least favorite thing would be...that's a tough question because I can't think of anything that I don't like about my job.
5. What has been your biggest challenge since being promoted to MD?
The biggest challenge so far is how much more work has to be done. I never realized before that you're basically constantly working. When I'm in my car a lot of times I'm listening to new bands and such. There's a whole lot more to do now, but it's all fun.
6. How did you get the nickname JoBo?
It came about in the time that Jennifer Lopez was JLo. When we were trying to think of an on-air name, one of the guys we work with walked by the office and blurted out JoBo! JoBo is the first two letters of my first and last name, and it just stuck. Even my dad calls me JoBo, now.
7. What has been your biggest accomplishment at the station?
Working as hard as I have, and it paying off. Becoming Music Director is definitely my biggest accomplishment at the station.
8. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Sending/receiving a text message.
9. What kind of music do you listen to when you are away from the station?
Everything really. Depends on my mood. The new Kanye album is in my CD player now.
10. If you were to leave radio today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
Well, any occupation, I'd like to be an actor, but with that said, it would be really hard to get me to leave radio.
