BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Programmed KYYX, KNBQ in Seattle, KKRZ/Portland, OR, KROY/Sacramento, KDDB, KQMQ/Honolulu, KKLZ/KCYE/KFRH/Las Vegas. Also worked in the music business for Interscope and EMI, and as a consultant.
1. What stands out the most from your first job in radio?
The DJ showed me how to work the board, and then told me he was heading next door for a sandwich, and never returned. Apparently he loved to drink, and instead of a sandwich got liquored up and forgot to come back. Talk about baptism by fire-water!
2. What led you to your current gig?
I worked with owner George Beasley to assist in the re-launching of KKLZ as a Classic Hits station, as well as the programming of AC KFRH, and then flipping it to CHR NOW in April 2009. I became the PD after his purchase of KVGS and KOAS.
3. How would you describe the music and imaging on KVGS?
We play the hits for 18-49 year olds in Vegas, and the imaging is fun and irreverent.
4. Why is the station seeing ratings success with PPM?
The past few months we have been #1 18-34, #18-49 Men, AND #2 25-54 Men. A big part of our success is great on-air talent: MJ & Chad in the morning, Dennis Huff in middays, Gonzo in afternoons, and Jeff G at night. They live and breathe the lifestyle of our audience.
5. What are you most proud of from the KVGS ratings?
With a small staff of dedicated professionals we have been able to excel in a very competitive and fragmented market.
6. How has the PPM impacted the way you program?
It's really simple...whether PPM or Diary, if you put together an entertaining and compelling product, get out into the community, maintain a robust presence online and on social networks, the audience will respond.
7. What is most important to you when evaluating new music?
Does it fit the vibe and context of the station? Does it have the potential to be a hit? I also like getting feedback from our air staff, and success stories at similarly formatted station helps as well.
8. What may surprise people the most about the Las Vegas radio market?
The latest census numbers show that Nevada was the fastest growing state in the USA, and population in Vegas has doubled in recent years. With that come growing pains, but also a lot of excitement and opportunities for people to pursue their dreams. Most residents are not originally from here, so there isn't that locals vs. newcomers mentality that you have in some markets.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _____________?
Being plugged in to pop culture and current events.
10. What are you most passionate about?
Creating a fun environment at the station that is conducive to personal and professional growth. I don't have all the answers, so I love working with our team to develop strategy and tactics that will continue to build our brands and careers.
