A change of season has come and it’s always a good time to evaluate your show or parts of your radio station. Just like cutting back dead growth of outside plants, you should do a little Spring pruning too.
- SONG LIBRARY
If your song library has grown larger without any pruning you should really look into it through science and/or art. Some radio stations don’t have the budget for more than one (or any) gold library testing every year. For those who have to rely solely on art/gut here are some tools you can use: Mediabase peer comparison, the top 20 charting songs of each year, and reach out to a station that you admire to learn. To make sure that the top songs are getting spun enough every week you may want to consider sub categories as well. Here’s an example:- Medium
- Heavy
- Power Recurrent

- Power Gold
- Classic Gold
- Gold 1
- Gold 2
- IMAGING & MUSIC BEDS
Do yourself a favor and log in to your production machine to find out how old your oldest imaging pieces, promos and music beds are. I bet you’ll be surprised to find some that should really be replaced. It’s easy to “set it and forget it,” but your listeners deserve your very best. - COMMERCIALS & UNDERWRITING SPOTS
While you’re in the production machine you may as well find how old your oldest commercials or underwriting spots are too. “But the client loves that spot that’s been running for 5 years” is not acceptable. It causes tune out and makes your station sound stale. “But we’ll lose them as a client if we suggest changing it.” Really?
If you would like to talk, I would be honored to help build confidence in you, your team, and your brand. Together, we can grow the greatest message and the greatest songs Beyond the (615) and into your local community.
