Think back to a time where you walked up to a group of people who were having a conversation and they didn’t acknowledge you. So, you stood there awkwardly hoping that someone would at least make eye contact and invite you in. But they didn’t, you felt completely left out, and so you walked away.
That’s what can happen on your radio show when you make sweeping assumptions. Not everyone listening knows what you’re talking about.
BE INCLUSIVE BUT NOT EXCLUSIVE
You can talk about almost anything. Just be mindful that not everyone listening fits nice and neat into that conversation. Some are on the outside looking in. So do your best to see and acknowledge them. Here are a few topics where on-air personalities can accidentally exclude a percentage of the audience:
Relationship status.
Parenting.
Sports.
Religion.
Inside stuff about your show. The key is to share in a way that recognizes and includes those who aren’t (fill in the blank).
HERES THE TAKEAWAY
Conversations that don’t feel exclusive happen when you put in the extra effort to acknowledge, or at least try to include, others who are “standing nearby” hoping to feel part of your conversation. The last thing you want is for them to walk away from your on-air break or even your radio station never to return.
Being inclusive without being exclusive is just another tool for your on-air tool belt.
