BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Discography:
- 2015 How Can It Be
1. Introduction/Synopsis....birthplace, childhood, schools, jobs, current hometown
Louisiana grown, born and raised. I went to LSU but ended after two years when I received a development deal with my current label, Centricity. I was a cake decorator, waitress, and a maid (I used to scrub toilets in exchange for singing lessons) before landing in my current hometown of Nashville, TN.
2. What does a normal day at home look like for you?
I love taking a breather when I'm at home. I do my best to unplug from road life and soak up the still moments. Primarily, I try to get out in nature by going on a hiking, resting in the sun, eating outside, or taking a walk. Food is a must. I frequent local food joints with friends or cook a meal at home to enjoy! I delight in cooking! Jeni's ice cream is the best to top off any day.
3. What's the song that you just can't get out of your head right now?
At this exact moment, it is Taya Smith's live version of "All I Need Is You." I am currently on tour with her. She sings this song each night with Hillsong United, and it grips my heart every time. These lyrics are my anthem for all times. They bring truth and set a foundation for my soul.
4. How much do you travel, what are the challenges? How do you juggle life on the road with wanting to be home?
Last year, I traveled about 250 days. There is plethora of challenges that present themselves. The way time functions on the road is very different from the way time functions back home. You are constantly battling the difficulty of trying to find normality to keep up with the way you used to function, but it all changes. You come home and realize what you have missed in the lives of your loved ones. It makes you feel like you are always trying to play catch up. Once you embrace the change, your head clears a bit. The challenges of the road become profoundly less difficult.
5. What Artist or Pastor has had the greatest impact on you?
My current pastor, Alex Seeley, holds a special place in my heart. I value her wisdom and her tenacity to push beyond limitations. Her boldness in her journey has inspired me. She seeks the heart of God like treasure and, therefore, is not afraid in the trials of life.
6. What's the last book you read?
I am currently reading the book of Daniel. It's teaching me how to lead others from a place of security in what God is capable of rather than earthly circumstance. It is stirring my faith to trust God for the miraculous. It's challenging me to question my heart and drive out any places of pride.
7. Funniest or most embarrassing moment on the road?
Well I'm not someone that gets embarrassed easily so I had to seek out some of my road peers for help on this one. They agreed that their funniest moment is every night when I wear my mouth retainers. They are super thick to keep me from grinding my teeth which makes me talk silly as well as look funny!
8. Take us through a couple songs on your latest project, "How Can It Be".
"First" was written from the passage Matthew 6 that discusses seeking first the kingdom over our earthly perspectives. It directs the reader to look at lily of the valley and the birds of the air and how God provides all of their needs beyond their ability to provide for themselves. It also instructs is not to worry, for who by worrying can add a single hour to his life? In the season of writing this song, I was dealing with anxiety in the pressures of the workforce. This was the passage that set me free from all of it.
"Trust In You" was written as an encouragement letter to those struggling with not seeing God's promises fulfilled the way their expectations desired. Sometimes, we go through seasons where we are desperate for clarity and seek for answers as the approach to whether or not we will believe in the power and truthfulness of God. We let our circumstances dictate His sovereignty. I was going through that time when my grandfather passed from cancer. I had to realize that what God was doing was much greater than my desire for clarity. He was taking me on the journey of trusting Him. A lot of times, it's the exchange of clarity for trust that revolutionizes our faith. That's what I needed to be reminded of.
9. What organization/service group are you affiliated with?
I've partnered with an organization called 3 Seams located in Cambodia and Nepal. They work to prevent and end human trafficking through the sex industry as well as set up graduate programs for students in poverty. I love the direct effects of working with a company that is still "mom and pop" but has a powerful impact on their local community. Their hearts are pure gold. I've been able to meet the founder and communicate personally with her for a while. It is beautiful to see her joy and passion come alive for those in compromising situations abroad. I'm honored to be a part of their organization by selling their bracelets and headbands at each of my shows.
10. Person you'd most like to have a discussion with, living or dead.....Deities are excused from this question
Pa- my grandfather and best friend who passed a few years ago
Bonus Questions
Favorite Bible Verse....life verse?
Proverbs 16:9- Man may choose his path, but The Lord directs His steps. This verse was introduced to me when I was undergoing an illness in my teens. I was placed on home bound for about 2 years. In that timeframe, God started giving me dreams and visions about music and the places He wanted to take me. Proverbs 16:9 reminds me that I don't have to work in my own strength, but that His promises prevail in all seasons, through all paths. He will lay down the stepping stones when we can see the road ahead.
