1. Brief History/Synopsis
I was born in Spokane, WA in 1988. I'm the youngest of four (two sisters and one bother). My dad was a pastor & my mom worked for the public school district. Our household was very music oriented. We treated Christian concerts & festivals like most families treated sporting events. My brother was in a band called Simons Cross that had some local success and I put together multiple bands throughout my childhood. Freshman year of High School I met the girl that would become my wife. We got married right out of high school at 18 years old. Almost 11 years later we are still happily married and living in Nashville, TN. I've been touring worldwide for the past eight years as the frontman for a band called Memphis May Fire. My wife Brittany owns and runs a Non-Profit called Beneath The Skin that offers peer-to-peer mentoring to young adults that struggle with anxiety, self harm, isolation, etc.
2. What does a normal day at home look like for you?
I love my family and friends. Being home means being able to spend time with them and catch up on everything I miss out on while I'm on the road. Mornings are special for my wife and I. We have a library in our house that is dedicated to prayer & bible study with each other in the morning. Midday I'm either writing music or doing interviews like this :) and in the evening we often have people over for dinner or attend gatherings with our friends elsewhere.
3. What's the song that you just can't get out of your head right now?
I am good friends with the guys in Hawk Nelson. I got the opportunity to hear a song called "Never Let You Down" from their upcoming album and fell in love with it! It has a fresh and exciting vibe with an encouraging message. Be on the lookout for that record, it's a game changer!
4. How much do you travel, what are the challenges?
The band I'm in spends 250+ days on the road. It can be very challenging to be away from home but I stay grounded knowing that God is using me to be a light in dark places. When we keep our eyes fixed on Christ, everything else seems to fall in place.
5. What Pastor has had the greatest impact on you?
Pastor Judah Smith has had a massive impact on my life. I lived in Seattle for a little while and attended his church during that time. I believe Judah is so anointed to speak truth into my generation. I still watch his sermons online all the time.
6. What's the last book you read?
The last book I read was called Lovely Things In Ugly Places. Written by a friend of mine named Mattie Montgomery. He wrote about his time on tour and all of the miraculous things God did in his life and the lives around him. I loved to see a different perspective from someone who existed in the same musical realm as me.
7. Funniest or most embarrassing moment on the road?
My band has put out five full-length albums, so at this point I'm kind of a pro at forgetting my own lyrics. This happens once or twice on every tour and every time I resort to acting like my microphone isn't working. To get back on track, I watch the people in the front row singing, they always remind me of the words!
8. Take us through a couple songs on your new solo project, UNSTOPPABLE.
The title track features my good friend Jordan Feliz. I wanted this song to be a reminder to anyone that might feel hopeless, that GOD'S love is unstoppable. No matter what our situation might look like, HE is in control & His love will never fail us.
There's a song on the album called "The Great Unknown" that is about asking God to take us out of our comfort zones and put us on the front lines for ministry.
Both songs are available now on iTunes and Spotify!
9. What organization/service group are you affiliated with?
Currently I'm affiliated with my wife's non-profit, Beneath The Skin, which I mentioned above. You can find more about it at beneaththeskinonline.org. I'm also a big supporter of my sister's non-profit. It's called "The Refuge Center For Counseling", located in Franklin, TN. They offer world-class therapy on a sliding income scale so anyone (no matter what their financial situation) can get AMAZING Christ centered therapy. refugecenter.org
10. Person you'd most like to have a discussion with, living or dead... Deities are excused from this question
I'm a big Morgan Freeman fan. I'd love to sit down with him and discuss the possibilities of him narrating my life... :).
Bonus Questions
1. Favorite Bible Verse... life verse?
Exodus 14:14 (NIV) says "The LORD will fight for you; you need only be still." This verse has been monumental for me in tough seasons. It's one I often return to for strength.
2. How & when did you become a believer?
I accepted Jesus at a young age, like anyone that grew up in the church, but I re-discover God's love in a new way every day. He is SO GOOD!
3. What's the biggest "God moment" you've ever experienced?
It would be impossible for me to narrow that down to one moment. I see the God move through the power of prayer EVERY SINGLE DAY! How amazing is it that we have DIRECT access to the creator of the universe!? All glory to God!
