NAME:David ObergoennerTITLE:PD, Morning Guy, Engineer, JanitorSTATION:KHISMARKET:Cape Girardeau, MOCOMPANY:Flat Foot MediaBORN:St. Louis, MO, Long ago!RAISED:St. Louis, MO
Brief Career Synopsis:
St. Louis and Cape Girardeau, MO, forever (or 38 years)
1) What was your first job in the industry?
Rush Limbaugh left KGMO in Cape Girardeau, so I got my first job there after he left room for me.
2) You're the morning guy. What does your routine for prep include?
Watching some early morning TV news and checking the Internet news services.
3) What has been your favorite feature or promotion at your station?
Favorite feature is the one we start this Saturday, "His Rock Alive." Favorite promotion was helping Operation Christmas Child collect nearly 13,000 Christmas boxes for kids around the world.
4) Who is your favorite on-air personality NOT at your station?
Sandi Brown at Joy-FM in St. Louis
5) What does Christian radio need to do to break through to a mass audience on a more consistent basis?
Take some lessons from the "new media" and give the listeners some more variety. The same old 350 songs are NOT what they want to hear over and over and over.
6) What are the greatest challenges in your position/job?
All the staff at KHIS are volunteers. Finding the time to do a full-time job for KHIS and still earning a living is a challenge.
7) And what are the greatest rewards in your position/job?
Practically every day we get e-mail from listeners telling us what a difference KHIS has made in their lives and their families. That's what it's all about.
8) If you were just starting in radio today, and you knew what you know now, would you continue forward?
Yes, but I wouldn't have spent so much time in mainstream radio. CCM radio is SO much more rewarding. Not in the dollars, but the difference it makes in peoples lives.
9) If you could have any other job outside radio, what would it be?
Bass player for Casting Crowns
10) Any favorite or funny artist run-ins? Highlights from a promotion or interview?
Getting to spend a bunch of after concert time chatting with Steve Camp who was greatly responsible for my coming to Christ.
Bonus Questions
1) Do you read everything or nothing? Do you have any favorite magazines, books, newspapers?
Most of what I read is on-ine these days. All Access is a must. I'm actually a broadcast engineer by profession, so I like reading Radio World, too. I also play bass (although I collect them more than play them these days) and like to read "Bass Player" magazine.
2) What music is in your CD player/on your iPod right now?
Caleb Rowden, "Free From Ordinary," it's an amazing CD!
3) Cat or dog person?
Cat, I'm into low maintenance and low noise.
4) Describe your favorite meal.
Just about anything I can BBQ. It's the only thing I know how to do with food. I could burn water in the kitchen
5) What is your favorite quote?
"It ain't rocket science, it's RADIO!" (from an old PD I used to work with)
6) If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want to have with you and why?
Bible, music player and LOTS of batteries! Music is usually more important to me than food and I never get tired of reading the Good News.
