Say It (May 22, 2007)1) Where did your journey in music begin? Was this always your dream?
I started singing in church when I was 3-years-old. My grandfather is a pastor so I grew up around music and ministry my whole life. I always knew that I loved to sing. When I was younger, I would enter pageants just so I could do the talent portion of the competition. When I was 17, God called me into ministry. Up until that point, I didn't really dream of being an artist. I didn't know exactly what my dreams were. I was still figuring that out. But I did know that God had a call on my life and a purpose for me that was so much bigger than any dream I could ever dream. God asked me to surrender my whole heart to him, and he said that he would bring every one of my dreams to pass. My dream now is to see peoples' lives changed, to see them healed and restored to a right relationship with God. As artists, our call is so much deeper than just the music. The music is a big part, but it's just a part.
2) What's the story behind your current single "You"?
Well, it's an interesting one. The record was finished, but we were still searching for that first single. I started writing for this record two years ago and by this point had at least 75 songs. I thought that we would definitely have everything we needed. I was wrong. So, I started writing again, but nothing seemed to be right. As a new artist, I didn't want to go out with a ballad because the record is so high-energy and fun. I did want to go out with a song that had a message and stayed true to who I am as an artist. One day while at the studio I said, "I can write this first single." I asked God to give me the song that needed to go out first. I started singing the melody to "You." My producer Tedd T. and I had the lyrics to the chorus started and finished in a matter of minutes. We then asked Cindy Morgan to help us complete the song. I remember saying to her that I was at a place in my life where I had been looking for love, acceptance, happiness, peace and all the things we search for in this world in everything but God. I wanted to return to my first love, "You."
3) What is the message you hope to convey through "Say It"?
We all have our struggles, our fears and our mess-ups, but at the end of the day there is one answer for everything, Jesus. I wanted people to see me, my experiences, my struggles; I wanted to be real and honest. Through everything that I have been through, I have found one thing that never fails, God and his word. I hope that these songs will bring healing, hope and answers to people who are searching for truth. I also hope it gives you strength and courage to fulfill the purpose that God has for you. And, I hope it makes you smile!
4) Describe a moment from the studio when you heard something that made your heart stop in a good, excited way.
It was the first day that I worked with Tedd T. I had been living in Nashville for two and a half years and had worked with several producers. I was looking for someone who got what I was doing, who understood what I loved musically, and for someone who would be willing to grow with me and my music. I know what I like, but I don't think I ever had "the sound" of my record defined when I started it. As someone once said, "the only thing constant is change." I needed someone that could change and grow with me. The first time I was at Tedd's, I started showing him different artists that I liked and explaining to him what I wanted for my record. He was like, "Oh yeah, like this." By end of the day, I had a track that I loved and knew that I would have an amazing record.
5) Why do you pursue this life of making records and touring and playing shows? How do you keep yourself grounded and out of the celebrity clouds?
I do this because I love God and I love people. There are so many hurting people who need to know the healing message of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, "I came that they might have life." I want to bring a message of hope, freedom, peace, joy and love. It's a blessing to do what you love. I never want to take it for granted. It's so cool that God can use little me to make a change in this world. This is a daily walk and I am learning that more every day. "Seek ye first the kingdom of God," I think that's where it's at. To make it a priority every day to seek God, through worship, prayer, the word, fellowship with like-minded people, when I do this I can't help but stay grounded.
6) What's your favorite song to perform live?
"Set the World on Fire" is such a passionate song about my heart and God's heart for this generation.
7) You were out on "Winter Jam" recently. Any good practical jokes from the road?
Well, my road manager Jenn is also my best friend, since 13, so we obviously have a little too much fun when we are out on the road. At night when everyone would crawl into their tiny little bunk, I would start saying, "meeeooooww," like a cat. Jenn and I would tell people that there was a cat in the bay under the bus, and they believed us!
8) You're hitting a lot of festivals this summer. Have you done many festivals thus far?
I have never performed at a festival and have only been to one, so honestly I don't know what to expect. I love singing outside so I'm looking forward to that. I'm probably not looking forward to the port-a-potty.
9) Imagine life without a career in music. What might you like to try your hand at?
I love to dance. I took dance for 12 years and taught for two. If I wasn't singing, I would love to open a dance studio. Maybe I will one day.
10) Where are you living nowadays? Still in North Carolina?
No, now I live in the best city in the United States, Franklin, TN. I live in an old historic house with my two roommates. I love it here. It feels like home.
Bonus Questions
1) What is your favorite road meal?
We used to get bus food every night of "Winter Jam." My favorite was Jersey Mike's. I don't know why, it was just so good at 2 in the morning.
