Cosmos (July 31, 2007)1) Give us a brief rundown of how The Send came to be.
I was in Falling Up for about three years and the opportunity came for me to explore doing my own music. During September/October 2006, I recorded my album with Aaron Sprinkle and really the rest of it is yet to be seen.
2) What's your musical background?
I have a very musical family. I grew up with music always playing in the house, and my Dad and older brother played guitar and piano. I basically learned guitar at a really young age and started learning how to play songs that I loved. I never really had any formal musical training. My dad basically just showed me some chords and I figured it out from there.
3) Is there an underlying thought or theme to the new record "Cosmos"?
"Cosmos" is basically about life in its entirety. In our world, our "cosmos," there are so many things that work together. The rotation of the planets defines our gravity, the moon pulls in the tides, which affects our weather, trees grow from sunlight and seeds and produce oxygen for us to breathe, etc. Basically, the idea is that everything in existence is working together. My record is about all the dynamics in life. The good things, the bad things, being close to God, being far from God. "Cosmos" seems like a proper title because the record is my reflection on life and how God has used every thing I've been through to bring me closer to him.
4) What's the story behind the single "An Epiphany"?
"An Epiphany" is a pretty desperate song. Well, I guess I was at a desperate place, more or less, when I wrote it. The song is about how we all go through the routines of our "everyday lives." I was at a point where I felt like I was doing the same things everyday, but there really wasn't a strong purpose underneath it all. I knew God and I considered myself one of his, but I wasn't CLOSE to him and I didn't have a deep relationship with him. "An Epiphany" is just about realizing that no matter what we do in life, unless we focus on understanding who God is and his unconditional love, we are nothing.
5) When you walk off stage, what do you hope the crowd is left with?
My goal live is to inspire people. I hope the audience enjoys the music, obviously, but also I want people to feel moved. Music has a power to influence our emotions, and I would love people to walk away from a show feeling like I've related with them.
6) Which do you enjoy more: the process or the performance?
That's really tough for me. I love performing, but there are so many things that can go wrong live, I would have to choose recording. Being in the studio is like being in a creative environment with infinite possibilities. When I finish a song or a record and I listen to it for the first time, that is the most rewarding feeling to me.
7) What's your favorite song to play live?
I love playing "Need" live. It has a certain energy to it and I am always sad when it's over.
8) Was there a moment while you were in the studio that you thought, "Ah ha! Now we have a record"?
That moment for me was probably when I finished "Blocking the Sun". I wrote that song during the making of the record, and it really was a surprise to everybody. I had no idea how it would turn out, or even what it would sound like as a whole. When we finished the last vocals on the song, I definitely thought to myself, "Wow, I'm actually doing it!"
9) What was a highlight (or highlights) of the "Oregon Trail" tour?
The best part of the "Oregon Trail" tour to me was probably just being able to hang with the Falling Up guys again. I spent three years of my life with those guys, and it was nice to see them and hang out again.
10) If you could try your hand at anything outside of music, what would be it be? Firefighter? Pastry chef?
That is such a hard question for me. If I wasn't doing music, I'd probably go into the mountains and live off the land. Just kidding. I don't know. I think I would enjoy teaching English or literature or something. Unfortunately, I have no degree or college experience, so that's a long shot for me.
