Psalms (2002)1) Give a brief rundown of the band's connecting with Inpop.
Steve Ford (who was with the label at the time) started calling us in the summer of 2001, for about two or three months. We didn't pay much attention to his calls because we were like, "the newsboys label?" But he kept leaving messages, "I'm calling everyday until you call me back." So, then we kind of tested him to see if he would do it; he did. We had a list of eight non-negotiable things and decided if they couldn't meet those, we weren't into it. They did, and so from day one with them we've been making our own records.
2) How do you guys mesh together? How does the partnership balance out?
After nine years together, we have more defined roles now. Shane B. is the shy one and he writes the music, and Shane E. does more of the bus mechanics and takes the business role. Shane B. is freed up to write if Shane E. does the business side of things.
3) What's the story and/or meaning behind the song "We Love You Jesus"?
Shane B.: Back in October 2006, I just had thoughts about 'loving Jesus.' I got surprised with a song. I heard this poppy melody. I heard a song in the air and I flipped open my Bible to 1 Corinthians 15 where it says, "O death, where is your sting? It has been swallowed up in victory." And that became the song. God bypassed me on this one, more so than on any other song. The song came in a flash. Then my father passed away, which makes the song so different now, as we sing this poppy melody about 'where is the sting of death' and to know that my hand hasn't been clinched in a fist when it easily could be.
4) Who do you admire in the area of songwriting?
Nichole Nordeman, David Wilcox, John Mayer
5) How have your thoughts on worship grown over the years?
Shane B.: I used to think that worship was different than life, but it's not. There's not a specific call to do it. We believe everyone is called to lead worship. If you believe in Christ, you are called to it.
6) Which do you enjoy more, the process or the performance?
Shane B.: The process, songwriting and recording, because I don't really like the other part.
7) What's your favorite song to perform?
Shane B.: "Vision of You" because it's a fun prayer to start the night or CD off with. Because what we have to bring is not just words and songs.
Shane E.: "Burn Us Up" because I get to sing.
8) When it comes to writing songs that matter and are effective, what's your gauge for that?
Shane B: The words come from the Word. God's words matter and mine don't. When I add a lot of me, things matter less.
9) Do you also, like so many other Texans, believe that Texas is the greatest state in the Union?
No
10) Do people ever forget your first names?
You'd be surprised.
