NAME:Kelly McKayTITLE:Music Director/AM Drive HostSTATION:WRCI-FMMARKET:Rochester, NYCOMPANY:Crawford BroadcastingBORN:Western NYRAISED:Western NY
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Mall in Rochester: WEZO-FM/WNYR 990AM, WARM 101.3FM-Music Director, WBEE-FM, WRCI-FM-Music Director.
I have been an On-air Personality (have done all shifts), Music Director and Public Service Director.
1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
My first job was as a board operator at an "elevator music" station (WEZO-FM) in Rochester in 1984. At that time, I also was an intern in various departments. It was an awesome experience. I went on to work PT on-air and moved into a FT the day I graduated college in 1986. Oye, I think I just told how old I am. I was amazed with Bill Coffey at WBEE. He just always had a way of uplifting and brightening your day and putting a smile on your face. I saw his show evolve over so many years. He is truly missed.
2) How do you prepare for your show day? What's your biggest challenge?
I put on a pot of coffee for my co-worker and I. Prep the weatherman's forecast and I surf every local information source I can find (most I do the night before). My biggest challenge is organizing all the great fun, family-friendly, locally-focused topics I find. There is so much good stuff happening in Rochester, it is hard to choose what my listeners want to embrace and would be interested most in. I spend about an hour to an hour and a half each day prepping.
3) What has made your show successful?
Our listeners! Without them, I wouldn't have a reason to come to work each day. And of course, God guides it all for His glory!
4) Who do you feel is your competition in your market, and how do you go about competing with them?
Our competition is from out of market sources. It is frustrating to compete for local listeners from a non-local source. We believe that we have a great product for our listeners that also is a fabulous local resource for them.
5) What is your favorite show feature and what makes it successful?
Giveaways... any and all… I love to give things away and bless our listeners. Daily trivia is so fun to try to come up with questions and hear the listeners' responses. They make it so fun and entertaining.
6) Best advice for making a show for a Christian station?
Be family friendly and be LOCALLY focused. Touch your listeners and make them part of your "family." Get out and enjoy the events they are enjoying.
7) If you could have any job outside the music business, what would it be?
Wow, That's hard... I have ALWAYS loved the music business. Tour Manager-that's music biz, Concert Promoter-that's music biz... Well I would have to say it would be doing SOMETHING to support families with chronically ill children-although I have no idea what... maybe volunteer at our local Ronald McDonald House or our local Children's Hospital.
8) What book have you read that has touched you or taught you the most?
The Bible!
9) What is the most precious memory of your life so far?
Ooooo, I have 2: The day I got married to my best friend and love of my life, Dan and the day my dad passed away. I was so blessed to be there when he took his last breath.
10) What is your favorite quote?
"It is finished." Jesus
Bonus Questions
1) Do you read everything? Books, Magazines, etc. Nothing? What is your favorite reading material?
The Bible as well as scrapbook magazines, paper craft magazines, stamping magazines: I am a HUGE crafter/scrapper. Country living magazines, Yankee, cookbooks.
2) What's in your CD player right now?
Avalon: "Testify To Love"
3) Cat or Dog person?
Dog... But small, I can put it in my purse puppy dogs.
4) If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 things would you want with you and why?
My Bible, My Husband and our Daughter. Need I say more?
