Brief Career Synopsis:
Discography:
Don't Wait - 2006 (solo debut)
Contact - 2002 (ForeFront Records, as lead singer with The Benjamin Gate)
Untitled - 2001 (ForeFront Records, as lead singer with The Benjamin Gate)1) Where did your journey in music begin? Did you ever dream you'd release your own record?
I started singing at a really young age. I wrote my first song when I was seven. I sang in our church's worship team and with my older sister who was in a band. I joined The Benjamin Gate (TBG) on my 17th birthday and came over to the U.S. from South Africa to pursue music. From when I was young, all I wanted to be was a singer and so I had many dreams of doing music, but after TBG I thought music was over, at least for a long time. But always, I just want to be in the Lord's will wherever that may be.
2) Working with Jeremy on DON'T WAIT, was it a match made in heaven? How did you guys balance home life with work life?
Of course it was! [wink] There were a couple times in the first half of recording when we had to take a moment, but over all it was such a fun experience and it'll definitely be happening again. I thoroughly enjoy working with Jeremy. He is very talented and such a godly example.
3) After recording albums as a member of a band, was your starting point any different as a solo act? What were some of your initial thoughts when you decided to record your own project?
Oh my word, completely different. I felt very insecure sometimes, having to step out without the band guys. But Jeremy has been a huge encouragement to me and I've just been so excited to share about Jesus with people. I'm in a completely different situation, being a mom and a wife and it's not a matter of "make it or break it."
4) Have your Benjamin Gate bandmates heard DON'T WAIT? Any feedback?
Well, it's kind of hard cuz we're spread all over the world. So I haven't seen any of them for a while. But I was in South Africa in January and I played a few songs (I only had three at the time) for some of the guys and they liked them. I'm excited to hear what they think of the whole album though. I still have an awesome friendship with my band brothers and value their opinion.
5) What is the message you hope to convey through DON'T WAIT?
I think more than anything I just hope that in any way possible, the Lord will use this project to encourage and spur on people's walk with him. I think the overall theme is about not waiting to follow Jesus with all your heart and keeping an eternal perspective.
6) What is your debut single "When It's Over" about?
"When It's Over" is about when we will be with Jesus in heaven one day. I can't imagine what it'll be like to finally hear the voice of God and to see him with my eyes. Just to finally feel complete and whole with my Savior Jesus is something I can't even fathom and I'm so excited for that day to come.
7) How would you describe yourself as an artist?
I love music and I love Jesus. I love to write songs and do anything creative. I also LOVE being a mommy to my girls and a wife to Jeremy. I probably see him as the artist and I love to support his ministry.
8) Your two baby girls are still quite young, but can you brag on them a bit?
They are so cute. Isabella is two and Arianne is nearly six months. Ari is super mellow and just very sweet. Bella is a complete ham. She keeps us very entertained. She's one of the most animated girls ever! They are both beautiful and such a blessing to us.
9) You start the tour with Jeremy and Hawk Nelson soon, as a solo artist now. What are you most anxious and/or excited about?
I'm excited to be on the road again. I've been on the road with Jeremy over the last three years, but not as a performer. I love being on the road and being with my family and so it'll be super fun. I'm so anxious about performing. I don't know what to do. [wink] The Benjamin Gate was almost easy in a way because we just went out there and rocked as hard as we could, but you can't really do that to mellower stuff. I know it'll be fine though. I'm excited to have an opportunity to share and sing again.
10) How does living in Indiana compare to other places you've lived? Is it just a lot of cornfields?
There are a lot of cornfields here!!! I grew up in South Africa and always lived along the coast, so it's completely different. They are both beautiful for different reasons.
