1. Please tell us how 2020 changed your relationships?
I’m thankful for the extra time I got to spend with my wife and my 5 year old son. Like many families, we spent a lot of time together in our house. This extra time with our son was really good timing, since he starts kindergarten in the fall of 2021. We cherished every extra moment we had with him last year.
2. Share the most challenging part of the past year.
I dealt with a lot of anxiety over the pandemic, both from loss of work and from fear of me or my family contracting Covid-19. We had many friends and family members who became ill and a few who passed away. I know countless people had a tough year because of the pandemic, and we were no exception.
3. Some really great advice you received recently was…
“Less but better.” I’ve been reading “Essentialism” by Greg McKeown, and it’s been really helpful to take a look at what really matters in life, and make sure I’m focusing on those things, rather than the many peripheral distractions we all encounter. I want to do fewer things but do them with intention and purpose.
4. How do you continue to deepen your relationship with Jesus?
I’ve been enjoying reading a chapter of my Bible each morning for the last couple of months. In February, I read a chapter of Matthew, since there are 28 chapters in the book and 28 days in the month. For March, I’ve been going through Mark. I usually read an inspirational or faith-based book in the mornings, but lately I’ve been reminded that I need to be reading from the Bible itself each day. It’s been great.
5. Share about that new song of yours.
“Undeniable” is about seeing God in creation. Romans 1:20 says that God is “clearly seen” by what He has made. I find that to be true, whether it’s in a sunset, the ocean, or the faces of the people made in His image (that’s all of us, by the way). Sometimes I struggle with doubt, but if I slow down and look around, I’m reminded that God’s presence is undeniable.
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
Sounds cliche, but I’d have to go with my wife, Becca. She is simply the kindest, gentlest, most Christ-like person I know. She teaches me what it means to follow Jesus. She loves God and loves people, and consistently puts others before herself. I want to be just like her when I grow up.
7. What would surprise people most about you?
I’m an introvert, and that surprises a lot of folks. Many think that people who stand on stage for a living are likely extroverts, and while I do love people, I need quite a bit of alone time to charge my batteries. Music suits me well, because I get a lot of travel time on planes, buses, and quiet hotel rooms where I can think, read, pray, and recharge.
8. What’s on your nightstand?
An engagement photo of me kissing my wife Becca that we took twelve years ago, a lamp, and ear plugs (I sleep with them every night, wherever I am).
9. What are you most excited about this year?
I’m excited to be releasing new music. Besides “Revolutionary” and “Undeniable,” I have some other new songs coming out. I’m really proud of them, and I hope they will be fun and encouraging to whoever listens.
10. What do you do for fun?
I really enjoy mountain biking here in Nashville. I also love reading, playing video games, and traveling with Becca and Asher.
