1. Share about that new song/album of yours.
My new song "No Matter What" acts as a bookend to my personal story and testimony shared through my previous radio singles "Fires" and "Weary Traveler." The last few years of my family’s life have been challenging as we’ve navigated my youngest daughter’s chronic illness. While the early days with Emery were inconsistent at best, this new normal drew us to a deeper understanding of how consistent God’s faithfulness truly is. When things get hard, this is a truth worth declaring — God is faithful no matter what!
2. Share a challenging part of the past year.
The most challenging part of the past year was getting a phone call from my wife on a Saturday night telling me “an ambulance is on the way, Emery is having a seizure.” I was in San Antonio, TX on the I Still Believe tour, my family home in Nashville, and there was no way to get back until Monday morning. I felt completely helpless. There was nothing I could do but pray and have faith, believing God had this and them in His hands. I got home Monday morning and we spent the rest of that week in the hospital. Emery ended up having multiple seizures but we eventually made it home where she made a full recovery.
3. Some really great advice you received recently was…
Over the last few years I have felt the weight of being in a “yes” season. Being able to say yes to different opportunities is exciting but it came with an unexpected burden as I tried to meet everyone’s expectations. I was sharing this with an artist friend of mine and he shot back with “You know, you make your own rules.” This really hit me. As it sunk in it allowed me to be human and embrace my limits, helping me see that “yes” and “no” are equally as powerful.
4. How do you continue to deepen your relationship with Jesus?
I’ve found the best way for me has been to engage with others in the vulnerable moments of life. To give you an example, a couple weeks ago we saw a girl maybe 5 or 6 along with what I assumed were her 2 older sisters in their teens selling lemonade in the parking lot of Target. My kids sell lemonade every summer so we stopped, paid a little extra for our small portions, and as we were about to leave my wife asked what they were raising money for. She got in the car with tears in her eyes and relayed to us they were raising money for a hotel for that night. It’s moments like these where we really get to go deeper with Jesus if we allow ourselves to get vulnerable. It’s not my job to know whether they were telling the truth or not, but to engage with the Spirit and ask the question, “what would Jesus do?” We paid for their hotel that night and my whole family and I got to go a little deeper with Jesus that day.
5. Share how you balance creating, recording, and performing.
Each has it’s own season where it is dominant but I would say I’m never not doing all 3 at the same time. Haha. I’m writing songs every day even if it’s just collecting ideas. If I’m not on tour I’m still developing ideas for live performance I will integrate in future shows.
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why.
My wife, Heather. She constantly leads me in the ways of compassion for those around me and reminds me in her actions of what really matters. If you’ve met her you know she’s pretty spectacular.
7. What's one thing that most people would be surprised to learn about you?
Coconut is by far my favorite flavor on earth. Coconut and chocolate, red curry with coconut rice. My wife once made sweet Khao tom mat, a Laotian/Thai dessert made with coconut milk, banana, and rice served in a banana leaf. Changed my life!
8. What’s your favorite room at home and why?
My favorite room in the house is the bonus room we have upstairs. It has a huge couch that fits the entire family on it. We can all watch movies together and it’s a great space that keeps us close with room for everyone.
9. What’s something you’re looking forward to?
We recently moved from Canada to Tennessee and I can’t wait to spend some time back home and visit all of the friends and family we miss so much.
10. What do you do to chill and unwind?
My wife and I will sit, talk, and have coffee. It’s simple but one of our favorite things we do to start and and sometimes end our days. I also love getting lost in a good movie or show. Helps turn my brain off. Haha.
