1. Share a moment in your career that you’ll always remember.
Oh boy, getting offered the Morning Show role! I was shook, startled, and shooketh again! The offer and conversation was over Zoom and I remember after it ended I just stood up in the middle of my office thinking, “did that just happen?”. It was one of the prayers you barely even whisper to yourself in fear of it being too big and God just comes swooping in with a big grin and an “I got you, kiddo.”
2. If you weren’t working in radio what else do you think you’d do?
Probably consulting work for nonprofits. I love helping other nonprofits with their voice – so their email campaigns and written pieces. And I also love helping them utilize their data and fundraise to the best of their ability. Helping the people that help people? Yeah, I’d definitely want to do that.
3. Some great advice you've received is…
A good run is a done run. My Dad says this all this time and I love it. We have always been a family of runners but funny enough, we are very slow. Like any slower we’d be going backwards, slow. But I’ve found that so often in life this advice works. Do you quit just because you weren’t the fastest, the first, the greatest or the best? NO. You keep going because you love to run. Or you love to do x, y, or z. God doesn’t say we need to run this race of life perfectly, just keep running towards Him. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how good it is along the way.
4. How do you continue learning and growing?
I ask for it and I stir the pot. So, in short, I’m annoying. I’m a firm believer that if you want to see change or growth in yourself or your organization you can’t wait for opportunities to come your way. You seek them out. You chat with influential people, and you ask all the questions, the whys? The hows? As long as you approach people with grace and are willing to listen and learn - don’t be afraid to stir the pot. I’m blessed to work with a community of people who encourage and foster this mentality. But no matter what, if you’re looking to grow or looking for a change don’t wait for it – go for it!
5. What’s one thing you wish you’d known about radio when you first started?
Radio is not a career, it’s a lifestyle. When I accepted my first job in radio, I had no idea just how much I would love it. Radio is not just my profession, it’s my community, my calling, my mission field…is that too corny? While that’s all been fun to discover along the way, a caution sign would’ve been nice too.
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
Dan Baughman, President & CEO of The River for the last 20 years. Dan is retiring this year and I am so thankful to have joined the wild world of radio with him as my leader. Dan is a listener, an innovator, and a champion of people. When The River does well, he doesn’t point to himself, he points to his team. He is everything you need for a winning game – your cheerleader, your biggest fan, your coach, and your teammate.
7. What’s something about you that would surprise most people?
Hmm, maybe that I’m not the deep one. I think as a female on Christian radio there’s an assumption that you’ll be the one to bring the deep and heartfelt to the table. I’m still growing that muscle! One of my co-hosts, Josh, is the true pro there. I’m much more comfortable in the world of dad jokes, puns, and downright silliness.
8. What’s your favorite room at home and why?
I just moved into a new place, and I am working on my home library! Is it necessary? No. Is it excessive? Yes. Am I so stinking excited? Absolutely. I have a bad habit of picking up a book and blocking out the world until I finish it. While I should probably work on not doing that – I’m going to lean into it instead.
9. Finish this sentence: My day doesn’t start properly until I...
Get out of bed? I wish I could say I have a great morning routine, but this girl is a whirlwind. Once my feet touch the floor I’m off to the races. Take the dog out, grab coffee, make breakfast, get in the car with a minute to spare, “wait, where’s my breakfast?” run back inside and grab my breakfast, speed to the station, get there just on time, stick the landing…ta-da! 10. What do you to unwind and chill?
See question 8. Okay, okay – I also love taking my pup, Murphy, on walks around town, catching up with friends over dinner and playing with my ridiculously cute nieces and nephew.
