1. Share a moment in your career that you’ll always remember.
KEVIN: Early in my career, I agreed to participate in a live, on-air skydive as a promotion for a local skydive center on Long Island. It was a tandem jump, and even though the chute deployed, something went wrong and my instructor and I both ended up in a big pile on the ground. I was knocked unconscious and my instructor ended up with a broken back (he was eventually up and jumping again after a couple of back surgeries)! As the instructor was being loaded up in an ambulance my GM sternly asked me, “well THAT didn’t go well, did it?“ Like it was my fault, somehow!!
AMY: I had only been on the radio for a few weeks. They let me do the news. I was feeling pretty proud. My family and friends could all listen. During my news cast I sad, "The Pope would be attending a bachelorette party happening at the University." When in fact he would not...He was attending the baccalaureate. I learned pronunciation is really important.
2. If you weren’t working in radio what else do you think you’d do?
KEVIN: Professional skydiver?
AMY: Along with my family and community, I want to mitigate homelessness in Corpus Christi with RVs and tiny homes. My family lived in a RV with the formally homeless in Austin for two years. It was transformative for all of us. We learned it's not about the housing--but community. Mother Theresa once said that "when we all pass on that will have the poor to thank, because it was then that we were closest to God." I believe that with all my heart.
3. Some great advice you've received is…
KEVIN: Put in the work, but then get out of the radio station and live your life. It’s hard to tell interesting stories if you never do anything interesting.
AMY: "Don't get an inflated since of self worth. You're just the ass He rode in here on." Alan Graham, Community First Village/Austin, TX
4. How do you continue learning and growing?
KEVIN: I listen back to almost all of our content on a daily basis. We’ll do aircheck sessions with our talent coach, TJ Holland, and I also try to catch other shows occasionally.
AMY: Mostly listening. I'm always trying to get better in this area.
5. What’s one thing you wish you’d known about radio when you first started?
KEVIN: I wish I had known ANYTHING about Radio when I started! I was a complete knucklehead and feel like I spent a lot of years just taking up space in this business. Finally got serious about it, and really began learning at some point, but it would’ve been nice to have found a mentor early on.
AMY: You don't need a college degree. Ha!
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
KEVIN: I’ve worked for some really great PD’s (Vance Dillard, Mike Blakemore, Bob Thornton), and respect each of them tremendously. But having worked with Tony Weir for the past five years, I can say that he’s one of the most humble and sincere men of God that I’ve come across in this industry. I love his heart for our little radio family and his passion for our brand!
AMY: All the usuals in our industry John Frost, Tommy Kramer, TJ Holland, Joe Paulo, Alan Mason, Tony Weir :).... more recently, the guy who just played Elvis, Austin Butler. He's an amazing storyteller, in interviews he is captivating. He's fully present. In every single interview he has a sly way making the interviewer feel like the special one. Just when I thought that--here is this "Hollywood Guy" doing the exact thing that we all strive to do with our listeners-- Vanessa Hudgens during an interview said that it was her former boyfriend, actor Austin Butler, who first took her to see Hillsong, that helped her to rediscover her relationship with Jesus.
7. What’s something about you that would surprise most people?
KEVIN: I ran my own home renovation business for a while. I lost money with every job, but it was a lot of fun while it lasted!
AMY: I'm painfully shy.
8. What’s your favorite room at home and why?
KEVIN: Garage! Tools, motorcycles, power equipment… What’s not to love!!!
AMY: Actually it's our front yard. Specifically, I like to eat my lunch outside. It may seem silly, but the world seems a bit bigger and I feel generally less confined in my thoughts. Did you know that your food actually taste different outside? The next time you are eating your sandwich, try it.
9. Finish this sentence: My day doesn’t start properly until I...
KEVIN: Okay, so I may have this little coffee weakness…
AMY: Hit the snooze button 23 times. God bless my light sleeping and disciplined husband that has to work a stressful job arguing with the IRS all day for still loving me after hearing that before starting his own work day for 20 years.
10. What do you to unwind and chill?
KEVIN: I tour and camp on motorcycles, and while I can only take 2 to 3 big trips every year, I get on a bike as often as I can. There’s no de-stressor like twisting a throttle.
AMY: Walk. My husband and I walk 3 miles everyday. No excuses. Some days I want to do it--some days I don't --but it doesn't matter. With three kids, it's one hour of uninterrupted time together doing something our body needs anyway. Things we've accomplished: planning for kids college, retirement savings talk, anniversary trip, apologizing, laughing, complaining about getting older...mostly him:)), how to navigate our aging parents knowing we'll be here too one day...etc.
