1. Share about that new song/album of yours.
Our new song “Thank God For Sunday Morning” really is my story. At an early age, I had a sense of not fitting in with my friends. I wasn’t as athletic, I didn’t feel as good looking, I just didn’t feel “cool” enough. So I began desperately running to the things outside of my parents’ faith to try and find worth and value. Everything I ran to broke my heart…. but that whole time God was running after me. This song is about what happens when God’s love reaches into your dark night. His love shines like the sunrise of Sunday morning.
2. Share a challenging part of the past year.
I think the most challenging part of the past year was trying to continue to safely sharing the music and message that God has given us. We’ve all had to learn how to navigate the pandemic, with extra precautions when touring and planning events. But we’ve seen God show up big even in the less than ideal circumstances.
3. Some really great advice you received recently was…
Talk slower, haha. I know that sounds funny but every time I’m on stage I feel this pressure to hurry up and say what I need to say because people may not want to listen very long or it might not be worth saying or whatever…. but my wife has been encouraging me lately that if it’s something I believe in, say it slowly and let people really hear it and take it in.
4. How do you continue to deepen your relationship with Jesus?
Staying in the Word. We grow deeper in relationship with someone by knowing them better. The best way to know Jesus is by the Spirit teaching us through the Word revealed about Him.
5. Share how you balance creating, recording, and performing.
I think it comes in cycles for me. I’m always performing and creating, but there’s seasons where its necessary for one to overshadow the other. For example, we are finishing a new album now, so the whole month of May I think I played one concert, but I was writing 4-5 times a week. Now that summer festival season has started, I’m touring every week, and maybe only writing here and there as inspiration strikes. Coming up in a couple months, touring will slow down again and I’ll go into the studio to record the next 10 songs for the album.
6. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why.
I’ve always had a lot of respect for Mark Hall of Casting Crowns. The local church has played a huge role in my faith walk, and I’ve served on staff at a local church for going on 10 years. Aside from Mark being a fantastic songwriter, I respect that because he felt called to continue his ministry at the local church, he’s made the necessary sacrifices to make it work. When I was first starting out in the industry it made me feel like if God wanted me to do both, it was possible.
7. What’s one thing that most people would be surprised to learn about you?
Hmm, most people are surprised to learn that I love interior design. I’ve always been hooked on those house shows like Chip and Jo.
8. What’s your favorite room at home and why?
Definitely my “piano room” I call it. We have a room in the house with a big window and glass french doors that holds my baby grand piano. It’s where almost all my songs come from.
9. What’s something you’re looking forward to?
I’m really looking forward to releasing our new music. I think this new album goes places that will really serve people well and breathe encouragement into their souls.
10. What do you do to chill and unwind?
I play golf a lot. Which isn’t always chill and unwinding haha But I love being outside and playing in the evening when the sun is setting.
