1. How in the world did you even get into radio?
While in high school, we had a media class, and our school was the first to have tv's in every room for the morning announcements. I got interested in media through the teach Ron Harrell. He then connected me with the tv studio, and I began running the little shure mixer controlling the on-air mics for the hosts. It wasn't long and I was running a camera. In my Junior year I was writing the scripts for the hosts to read and then my senior year I was one of the anchors on air. Then on to college with a major in Radio/TV film and interning at WMKC-Oshkosh, then to WHBY-Appleton and in 1981 fulltime at WEMI-Appleton and have been there ever since.
2. What's one thing you wish you had known about radio when you first started?
How much of an impact it has on the lives of those that listen to it. As well as the impact it would have on my own life.
3. How has God pulled you out of your comfort zone?
I have learned that you shouldn't get too comfortable as change is constant and inevitable. As challenges/opportunities you're your way, you will grow as you step out and step forward. Having worked with a variety of leaders through the years I have come to appreciate the ones that appreciate you.
4. Some great advice you recently received is…
I am valued and my input and insight is appreciated.
5. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
Roger Lonnquist, President and GM of Your Network of Praise in Montana. I have had the opportunity to help with their fundraising for over 10 years and have built a friendship through the years. His approach to ministry is one I can support. They've raised money for another ministry the day before their annual fundraisers. Totally blew me away. Found out that his board meetings are preceded in prayer that often last 2-4 hours, followed by a board meeting that may be shorter. Our conversations have been beneficial for each of us. Another would be Bob Augsburg-even though we've never worked together, I have watched from a distance how God has used him and raised up a radio network and blessed it. Another would be Lauren Libby-he and I were doing a fundraiser in Bozeman, MT and I finally got to know him after only seeing him speak at conferences. I learned from him how to see the opportunities around us and the people around us to fund the ministry.
6. What's one thing you try to do when life gets hard?
Remember that this is nothing compared to what Christ went through on my behalf. I know He is with me every step of the way, no matter how hard it may be.
7. What's something about you that would surprise most people?
I ref soccer each fall. I was a grade 8 certified ref for over 15 years. (or I came to Christ in 1971 at a vacation Bible school in a church basement —I could write a lot more).
8. What's your go to song when the windows are down and you're driving on the highway?
"Jesus Loves Ya" by Jon Gibson and "God Really Loves Us" by Crowder & Dante Bowe
9. In three words describe your ideal vacation.
Water. Fishing, Bible.
10. Tell us one thing that you bought recently that WASN'T on your grocery list.
Sorry. Not that kind of guy. Usually stick to the list, bag the game, and get out of the store.
