1. Share a little bit about that new song/album of yours.
"The Lord's Prayer" is on my new album, "The Stories I Tell Myself" - the album explores the themes of friendship - with God, with others.
Obviously the words of this song are from the Bible - it was started by my co-writer (and co producer on the song) Bryan Fowler - he just wanted to write a musical form of it for his kids to sing…as I was driving down to Franklin, TN from Nashville to make a demo, I pretty much wrote the bridge in my head on the way down and just started singing it when I walked up to the mic….it was one of those spontaneous moments of creativity that as a songwriter and artist are always exciting and satisfying
2. What's one thing you wish you had known about being an artist when you first started?
That's a long list - one of the bigger ones I've been reflecting on is this - you can only be where your feet are currently standing. Enjoy every moment and don't focus too much on what's ahead. Be present to where you are and what's around you.
3. How has God pulled you out of your comfort zone?
I started out as a keyboard player not a singer - that is still something I try to get used to lol
4. Some great advice you recently received is…
The best music is about making specific choices. Make those and be content. Otherwise, you make stuff that's a mile
Wide and an inch deep and it doesn't really appeal to anybody.
5. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
Well I'm currently reading Rick Rubin's book on creativity. He seems to have a pretty incredible compass for helping lead artists to a place of real honesty, vulnerability and authentic expression, which is super inspiring and something I'm trying to always pursue more of in my process.
6. What's something about you that would surprise most people?
For some reason, I've accumulated a large number of random facts. Like for example, how the size of an atom to a person is the same ratio as a person to the sun.
7. What's your go to song when the windows are down and you're driving on the highway?
There's never just one song…but anything off of Tom Petty's "Full Moon Fever" is a good start.
8. In 3 words, describe your ideal vacation.
No itinerary needed! (Aka someone else planned it. LOL)
9. Describe your life when you're not writing, recording or touring?
I'm basically just a stay at home dad trying to not mess up the system my incredible wife has going lol…..you wanna stay connected with your family on the road but it's just not the same as physically being there…so you try to reenter that with a mindset of serving them all and not so much to get your own batteries recharged. There's a whole life happening and it's real easy to just come back like a bull in a China shop and wreck everything….kids need stability and you to enter into THEIR world and life and not just you dragging em around yours.
10. Tell us one thing that you bought recently that WASN'T on your grocery list.
I never have a list and my grocery store trips suffer immensely because of it. That being said I think the last impulse item I bought was some new cereal called "Three Wishes" - that of all the gluten free cereals I've tasted, it's not too bad. Most taste like a form of cardboard. This one has a nice crunch to it.
