1. How in the world did you even get into radio?
My High School Speech teacher bribed me into trying an event called, "Radio" where you prepped and delivered a 5-minute news segment and competed against other students. It didn't take long. I loved creating and delivering content. In college, I majored in Communications, started working in radio and haven't stopped.
2. What's one thing you wish you had known about radio when you first started?
It's harder than it looks.
3. How has God pulled you out of your comfort zone?
The most shocking and intimidating time was when I was asked to be the GM of JOY FM. I had worked 3 years to help launch the station, but I was never supposed to lead it. (I was going to be the PD). A GM was hired and a few weeks before the station launched, the new hire backed out. So, our Board of Directors asked if I would step in and lead. I agreed with one stipulation: They needed to find a new GM in the next year.
That was 22 years ago, and I still have the most unexpected honor of my life.
4. Some great advice you recently received is…
Manage your expectations. It will help in leading yourself and others. I can tend to drift toward disappointment when outcomes don't match my expectations. I'm learning that adjusting my expectations can reduce disappointment. That is a win.
5. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
Nick Spiniolis, my co-host on the JOY FM Morning Show. In addition to being creative, funny, and compassionate, He is steady. He leads himself and his family well. He is respected by everyone on our team. He is strong enough for any task and tenderhearted enough to make everyone he encounters to feel seen and known.
6. What's one thing you try to do when life gets hard?
I try not to cry. But it usually doesn't work.
So, then I try to: 1. Invite God into my thoughts and feelings. 2. Speak truth to myself. 3. Surround myself with some trusted truth speakers in my life.
7. What's something about you that would surprise most people?
I like pigs. They are misunderstood and underestimated. I have a flying pig in my office. It is metal, colorful and sits on my credenza. It reminds me that all things are possible.
8. What's your go to song when the windows are down and you're driving on the highway?
Anything by KC and the Sunshine Band. Or Elevation Worship
9. In three words describe your ideal vacation.
Maui. Maui. Maui.
10. Tell us one thing that you bought recently that WASN'T on your grocery list.
Haagen-Dazs caramel cone ice cream
