1. How in the world did you even get into radio?
Jim Turner, the GM of small country station in the town I grew up in, came to my High School and asked the English teacher for students who could read well. He had the afternoon drive slot open. I tried out. Got the gig! I'd leave school at 2pm and be on the air at 3pm. I did weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings…all live!!!
2. What's one thing you wish you had known about radio when you first started?
Don't try and be the star. Allow the music and the stories be the star. You're the just the communicator. But be the best communicator you can be. They'll remember songs and stories long after we're forgotten.
3. How has God pulled you out of your comfort zone?
Kayla, my wife, and I have been doing a podcast for about a year. It's "The Peas and Carrots Podcast." Our faith, life, stories and so on. She's a true talent. She gets the listener and wants to truly encourage them. Me? I want to be a comedian. God has used the podcast to once again show me that it's not about me. It's about the listener and what they want. Yes, at this age and stage of my career – I need to be reminded of that.
4. Some great advice you recently received is….
I have a leadership mentor that I meet with each week. He recently said to me, "Stop listening to the voices in your head." P.A.R. can have a truly successful season or accomplish an unreal goal and I'll walk away wondering what I could have done better as a leader. I celebrate the team, but I often feel like I'm a failure or the hurdle. It's something I'm working on. And sorry if that answer got a little too real…
5. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
My wife, Mrs. Kayla. She loves people. Genuinely loves people. It isn't a show or some fake front. She LOVES people. I so respect that. Her motives are pure, and her care is to be admired. She has no agenda. When I grow up, I want to be like her.
6. What's one thing you try to do when life gets hard?
Tough question. I try to remind myself, and I fail at this miserably, that life isn't about me. It's about Him. All the mess, hurt and struggle…it's meant to make me more like Jesus and make Him known. That's easy to write but hard to live.
7. What's something about you that would surprise most people?
I won second place in a tennis tournament in 5th grade.
8. What's your go to song when the windows are down and you're driving on the highway?
Whatever is playing on one of our amazing P.A.R. stations!
9. In three words describe your ideal vacation.
Kayla. Rome. Venice.
10. Tell us one thing that you bought recently that WASN'T on your grocery list.
A book about Abraham Lincoln. I know, you're so shocked…
