1. How in the world did you even get into radio?
My mom worked at various radio stations throughout my childhood. Some of my earliest memories happened at radio stations. When I got to college, I majored in Electronic Media with an emphasis in Audio Production.
2. What's one thing you wish you had known about radio when you first started?
I used to think that market size represented success. The bigger the market I climb to then the happier I'll be. That couldn't be further from the truth. Some of the most talented and happiest people I know are working in markets that are ranked around 200. I now understand that the people you're working with and the leadership you have can make or break an experience.
3. How has God pulled you out of your comfort zone?
I don't think I've ever really been in a "comfort zone". Especially since I started working in radio. I've worked in 5 different markets (Sioux Falls, Fargo, Orlando, Kansas City, and Columbus) in the past 10 years, so when I start figuring out where I'm going or what I'm doing God has called me to a new assignment.
4. Some great advice you recently received is…
"Know your role and shut your mouth, you jabroni!"- Travis Kelce. That advice wasn't given directly to me, but I think it's a good lesson to stay in your lane and not gripe or draw attention to yourself. Plus,
Jabroni is a cool word and I try to use it as much as possible.
5. Tell us about someone who you really respect and why?
Rick Hall has been a mentor of mine for a few years now. He's been a great person to seek advice from personally and professionally.
6. What's one thing you try to do when life gets hard?
Proverbs 16:27 says "Idle hands are the devil's workshop." When things get hard, I notice that if I don't stay busy my mind gets in trouble. I try to work on body, mind, and spirit every day. Which means for me I go to the gym, play guitar, spend time with family and friends, or play a sport of some kind. I try to focus on controlling my controllables and trusting God to control what I can't.
7. What's something about you that would surprise most people?
I've seen the Newsboys 19 ½ times (I say ½ because in college I snuck into their soundcheck).
8. What's your go to song when the windows are down and you're driving on the highway?
"Renegade" by Styx or "The Resistance" by Skillet are my "get pumped" songs! I really like songs that were popular in the 90's also... Bands like Matchbox Twenty, Gin Blossoms, and the Goo Goo Dolls are always in a road trip rotation.
9. In three words describe your ideal vacation.
Baseball, Beach, Rest… I'm working on a bucket list goal of attending a game at every MLB stadium, so my vacations are often based on which stadiums I haven't been to yet.
10. Tell us one thing that you bought recently that WASN'T on your grocery list.
A boxing membership! I was getting bored on treadmills and thought boxing would be a more fun way to get back into shape!
