Class Reject (2009)1) Can you tell us briefly about your journey in music and how you came to work with Revolution Art?
I started out singing background for a lot of local artist in Jacksonville. My producer, Maurice Henderson, saw me sing at a Christmas jazz concert when I was 15 and took me under his wing to develop me as an artist. Then in mid-2008 Maurice and Grits decided to bring me on as a Revolution Art artist.
2) Who influences your musical style?
As you may have noticed, the album is very diverse. I pulled from just about every genre because that's what you'll find on my iPod!
3) What is the message you hope to convey through the new record "Class Reject"?
"Calling all misfits! Calling all misfits!" Haha! I just want to reach young people who feel that they don't belong and let them know that they feel different because they were meant to stand out.
4) What's the story behind the new single "The Unseen"?
When I heard the track for the first time I said, "This one is for the rebels!" We've all had those moments in life when we contemplated what it would be like if we didn't play by God's rules. A lot of people don't like to address those thoughts, but they are so real.
5) What is your favorite song on the new records? Can you pick just one?
My favorite would have to be "Who You Are." It's, line by line, exactly what I went through in high school. It reminds me of how far I've come.
6) Maybe other than a T-shirt and CD, what do you hope an audience leaves with from one of your shows?
I want them to leave with hope, confidence and the courage to be themselves.
7) Do you have a favorite song to perform live?
It's a toss up between "Who You Are" and "Don't Leave."
8) As you were in the studio working on this record, did you have any "ah-ha" moments when you thought, "Now we have something, and this is good!"?
The "ah-ha!" moment came after we recorded "Me and My Radio." We didn't really have any solid dance songs and it ultimately set the tone for the rest of the album!
9) Do you have much time to check out other artists' music? What are you listening to right now?
I have a cousin who's a real music head and she's constantly harassing me about listening to new music. Right now she has me on some Go-go music from local bands in the DMV area.
10) What has your summer looked like? What does the remainder of 2009 hold?
My summer was kind of surreal. I released my debut album on June 2, and since then I've been doing a lot of spot shows in Florida. The rest of 2009 you can expect me to just be traveling around to different youth groups across the country and doing a few shows with Grits as well. Also, I'm going to start working on some new material for the next album!
Bonus Questions
1) Who would be a dream artist to record with and why?
I'd love to work with Andre 3000! He is just so deep and weird. I love it!
2) Favorite city to visit:
Home. It's always great to come back home to Dallas after being gone for 2-3 months straight.
3) If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want with you and why?
If were stranded on an island, I'd want a box of bottled water, a motorboat and some fuel. I think that's pretty self-explanatory!
