That's What People Do (Indie release in 1997)1) What were some of the band highlights from the past year or so?
Playing the Winter X Games in Aspen was amazing. Having "Fire It Up," a song off the new record, included in the "G.I. Joe" movie trailer and on EA sports NHL 2010 was also incredible. It's been a busy and exciting year, and we're looking forward to releasing the new album and seeing what's ahead.
2) What's the story behind the new single "Forward Motion"?
This song is about us moving forward as a people, regardless of what faith we claim, what church we go to, and what badge we wear. Getting back to loving each other the way God intended it to be.
3) What message do you hope is conveyed on the new album "Welcome to the Masquerade"?
The "Masquerade" theme is about the masks that we all wear in our lives to hide things about ourselves from others. It's saying, "Welcome to the Masquerade!" We're all imperfect. It's OK and no one is perfect. God loves us for who we are and where we're at.
4) You have the Creation Festival tour coming up this fall. What are you most looking forward to with this tour?
My other band FM Static is on this one as well, so it's gonna be a riot. FM and TFK are worlds apart, so the shows will be very different. We asked to open the entire show with Static to make time for transition, so it should be fun.
5) As you were in the studio recording, did you have an "ah-ha" moment when you thought, "Now we have a record - and this is good!"?
When I was already in the studio tracking the record, it felt like a piece of the puzzle was missing, so I sat down and wrote "Already Home" on a lunch break and it's one of my favorite songs on the record.
6) What's your favorite song to perform live?
It's been "The Flame In All Of Us" until lately. We started playing "Fire It Up" and "Bring Me To Life" live and it's been insane. The response has been exciting.
7) As you leave the stage, what do you hope the audience takes home with them, other than a CD or t-shirt?
I hope at the end of the day, that they leave encouraged and inspired.
8) Do you have any humorous or interesting stories from radio visits in the past year?
I've had a few where they get TFK and Static mixed up and reference songs and questions for one when talking about the other. It's always funny trying to politely answer it without making things awkward. We just had one in Holland where they challenged us to a game of paintball for their "vodcast" live and we left there wounded with some generous welts. Ha!
9) What's your favorite venue/city to play?
There are several out there that stick out, but Parachute Fest in New Zealand is definitely up there. It was amazing.
10) Do you have much time to check out other artists' music? What are you listening to right now?
I'm pretty much working on music non-stop for my bands, or for/with other artists, so I make it a ritual every Tuesday to preview all of the new music. I love also going back and listening to great music from the 60s-90s. So many great bands. Right now, I'm listening to the new Ingrid Michaelson ("Everybody"), the new Billy Talent ("III") and some old Veruca Salt, always a classic.
