It stands to reason that when people work in close quarters on a regular basis, there'll be occasions that they may not agree on everything. A discussion over a difference of opinion can be healthy. I’ve been in a lot of situations and seen all sorts of things happen around stations. No matter the format, people are people and stuff happens. Among all the things I’ve been a witness to, there's one incident that stands out. It still makes me laugh every time I think about it.
What The Hell ...
During my programming days I came to work one early morning to a bit of a situation. I walked by the on-air studio on the way to my office and my morning show twosome were loudly having a difference of opinion off air. I glanced into the studio window and one member of the duo had their forearm against the neck of his partner up against the wall.No Harm No Foul ...
I didn't see any blood; therefore, I didn't automatically rush into the studio. After I settled into my office, I thought I'd head back to the studio, but the red light was on which of course meant they were about to go on the air. So, I stepped back into my office. I listened to them do a great talk-set going into a commercial break. I thought to myself, they sound great, no reason to interfere just yet. Before Others Arrive ...
I listened to a few more breaks and waited until the traffic report came on. I quickly stepped into the studio to have a short chat with them. At that time of the morning, we were still the only people in the building because it was about 6:35am. I told them I had noticed they were having a disagreement, "I don't want to hear about it until after you get off the air." I added, "In the future, whatever issues you're having, I want it settled before everyone starts getting to work.” Then I complimented them on how great the show sounded. In fact, I thought to myself, maybe they should fight in the studio every morning off-mic.It's Not That Big A Deal …
There are times that you need to let your people on the morning show solve their differences on their own. If there are no gunshots, stabbing, fisticuffs, or office gossip over a problem between co-hosts, everything is fine. It’s just a family miscommunication among friends. But if the disagreement affects their performance on the air, then that’s not good and is a different column for another time. -
