1. You are a veteran of both the record side and the radio side. As a radio guy what made you want to go to a label?
I came up as a Music Director. Love of music was what made me get into radio, and what made me go into the record side. And the expense account.
2. Why did you come back to radio and did the switch to records cause any change in your programming philosophy?
I came back to radio because I love my kids more than I did the record business. The experience has not caused any change in my philosophy. Play the hits, champion those artists and songs that you love.
3. Is it important to work in a major market anymore?
I can tell you that we have far more tools and resources available to us at Federated Media in a medium / small market than many of my friends who work in the large markets have. Smaller companies seem to be the place to be right now, regardless of market size.
4. How 'local' is your station as opposed to others in the market?
We are the most "local" station in the market. We're live 5:30am to 11pm. Live most shifts on weekends. Run local news in AM and PM Drive. Involved in all local events and activities. If it's important locally, it's important to us.
5. How hard is it to find part-timers and new people to break in? Are you finding young people still attracted to working in radio?
It's really tough. We do a lot with intern programs from the local universities. Three of my current air staff started with the station as interns / roadies. Young people aren't exactly knocking down my door, so we go knock on theirs.
6. What is your fantasy job- and you're not allowed to say your current position.
When I was a kid, I really, really wanted to be an Astronaut. I'd love to own my own radio station some day.
7. Do you paint your face for the Fighting Irish on game days?
No, the red you see on my face on Saturdays comes from embarrassment. Maybe face paint would help! I'm still watching and hoping however. Go Irish, beat Navy!!
8. What kinds of things do you do in your spare time?
I bought a motorcycle this spring, and ride as often as possible. I also spend a great deal of time with my kids. That's why I left the record business. Remember?
9. What new Country acts are you really excited about?
The Drew Davis Band is the real deal. The new Cross Canadian Ragweed album "Mission California" is amazing. I still think Joe Nichols should be a superstar by now. Do The Eagles count as a new country act?
10. What's the best advice you've ever gotten? Worst?
Former GM Dale Weber taught me to "Always do the right thing." It's not always easy, but you can always sleep at night. Worst? Oh C'mon. Have one more drink.
