NAME:Brian "B-Mo" MontgomeryTITLE:Music Director / Afternoon Drive KUBB FMSTATIONS:KUBB / KBRE / KJMQMARKET:MercedCOMPANY:Buckley BroadcastingBORN:Tampa, FlaRAISED:Tampa
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Was feeding calves and doing sales, when my PD at the time Justin Flores asked me to read a script and proclaimed, "those are some great pipes" I thought he was talking about the pipes on the truck! I was wrong! I left sales and began voice tracking at KJMQ (thanks to Justin Flores). I then sharpened my claws at the most kick ass rock station on the planet KBRE 92.5 The Bear (thanks to Dave Sparks & Mikey). I got back to what I really am though and evolved backwards LOL, and became a KUBB (Thanks to Rene "Bubba" Roberts). He created an opportunity, and together we've owned our yard and grown more than anyone could've guessed and if you're going head to head with us. And more than they would've liked!
1. What was your first job in radio?
Sales. My Early influences? Mason Dixon / Scott Shannon / Cleveland Wheeler - WRBQ, My brother from another mother Mark Vann- WTMP/WYLD, Russ Albums (the man I wanted to be when I grew up) and finally Bruce Campbell, I figured if he could score with the ladies, I knew I could!! HA-HA!
2. Can you be a boss and also a friend to your employees?
I say yes. Establish lines and what you expect and it's easy. You tend to want to come to a friend for guidance, there's a desire to never let that friend down, which pushes you to do everything in your control to succeed. If you're employees are loyal, then there's no gossip or B.S. to deal with.
3. Of all the skills that you've gained as a programmer, which area are you NOT as strong as you would like to be?
Seeing how I've just gotten to that point of the game, I'd say selector and ummm AOL IM. That has to be a big part of what goes into programming, as my PD does it all day! LOL
4. If you are wearing more hats today, than say last year, what area is suffering, and what are you doing about it?
I push myself to be stronger at everything, but anyone who knows Rene Roberts, you wouldn't get more hats if anything was "suffering!"
5. What do you like best about your job?
Being able to be a conductor of sorts, music has a way of taking anyone to another place or time at the touch of a button. Least? I didn't get in to it sooner!
6. What do you plan to differently in the next year regarding work and family?
Find balance with both. Radio isn't a 9 to 5 deal. I just had a baby boy and Mason will keep me busy, as well as my daughter Nikki, who has her heart set on following my foot steps. Getting to this level in my career with the success I've had, wasn't as hard as staying here!
7. Who are your programming mentors?
First and foremost Rene Roberts KUBB, he knows and sees more than people realize. Dave Sparks & Mikey Martinez KBRE- the attitude that brought me to the dance! Last but certainly not least, Justin Flores KKBN, you started all of this, without you, I'd be down on the farm!
8. What's your take on current music? Is it as good as say, six months ago? Better than it was? Same? Elaborate please!
DEFINITELY BETTER! It is a reflection of what we grew up with. There's a balance of a southern rock taste combined with common thread of what made this format great. Our listeners haven't forgotten the Waylons, Willies, and LeDoux! There's a little outlaw in us all and I'm excited about where this format will be in three years!
9. In your opinion, what is the greatest song ever that never made it as a hit?
Kiss My Country Ass - Rhett Atkins. I've never heard a song that described not only myself to the letter, but anyone who calls themselves country!
10. Next Superstar Programmer?
I'd have to say either the current Music Director at KUBB or Steve Gomez of KHTN. Gomez is the total package, dedication, work ethic and anyone who can survive working as closely with Rene Roberts for as long as I have, must be doing something right!
Bonus Questions
1. You are on a desert island...what 5 CDs are in you portable disc player?
"Kind Of Blue" - Miles Davis, " Wanted: The Outlaws" - Waylon, Willie, Jessi, Tompall, "Greatest Hits" - Tim McGraw, "Tunnel Of Love" - Bruce Springsteen, "Sign O' Times" - Prince
2. Describe your favorite meal?
Crow, not for myself because I believe I've served up plenty for everyone who thought what and who I am was an act! We got lots more, so y'all come back now, ya hear!
