Started out in Charlotte at WROQ (rock) in 1986. In 1989 I moved to Fayetteville, NC at WQSM (AC), programmed there till 1995 and then moved to Greenville with WFNQ (country), stayed there for 6 months then moved to the next studio down the hall to WESC (country), moved to WSSL in 2000
1. What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
Paid job was WRHI in Rock Hill, SC running Bruce Williams and Talknet. Early influences were Greg Fowler and Freakin Deacon at WKZQ in Myrtle Beach, Spider Harrison in Nashville at WLAC, John Landecker at WLS. When I was a kid, I grabbed my little radio and sat on the roof of the house to pick up all these cool stations. Thanks to my Dad and Mom for understanding!
2. Can you be a boss and also a friend to your employees?
Sure. It ain't easy. You both have to be mature enough to know the boundaries.
3. Of all the skills that you've gained as a programmer, which area are you NOT as strong as you would like to be?
Managing people, Bruce Logan says I'm "too nice."
4. If you are wearing more hats today, than say last year, what area is suffering, and what are you doing about it?
None of it has to suffer. I just work harder.
5. What do you think of National Contesting? Is it effective?
I'm good with national contesting. It's all in how you sell it on the air. I think listeners are wise to what is national and what's not. It still is better to have a chance at $100 grand than have no chance at all.
6. What do you like best about your job? Least?
The people. I work with some of the best in the business.
Least? Less to work with and higher expectations.
7. What do you plan to differently in the next year regarding work and family?
Gosh, my kids are growing too fast. I 've got to do a better job of being "Dad" when I'm home. Turning off the radio and TV and soaking them in.
8. Who are your programming mentors?
Bruce Logan. As much as it pains me! Love that guy. He is so smart. Our current OM here is awesome, Steve Geofferies. He is way ahead of most 'twenty- somethings' in this business. John Landrum at WESC is the picture of consistency, a good man.
9. Who's your favorite air/personality not on your air staff?
Gerry House/WSIX Nashville. I voicetracked there for over a year and was honored to be a part of that team. Just to say those call letters, man oh man.
10. Next Superstar Programmer?
Steve Geofferies.
