April Fools Numbers
About once a year, following a station’s very successful April Fools bit, someone will ask me, “Why would a station do that? What benefit was there for them?” This is usually said in a tone like, “What kind of sick son of a bitch ties a dog to the bumper?”
So why did JACK in Vancouver flip to an all Sea Shanty format (complete with a PSA about scurvy)?
- Because it was fun.
- Because they could.
- Because their web traffic went up 311% during the four hour format and social media engagement went up 400%. And they added followers on all their channels.
But mostly because it was fun.
Food Challenges
It’s a beautiful Spring Friday in Minnesota and on beautiful Spring and Summer Friday’s in Minnesota, we all quit work early and head north to places like Brainerd and Alexandria. If you live “north”, you go “west” to North Dakota and return sad and disappointed.
So today’s eblast is all about KIK-FM in lovely Alexandria, Minnesota.
If you would prefer to create content rather than just repost other people’s stuff, look at Mo & Ro on YouTube and the staggering numbers they get with doing food challenges.
For Easter, Kris and Chelsea dove into a Mo and Ro bit: stuffing their mouths with Peeps. And it was good. Facebook
Engaging The Listeners
Dan Seeman, who oversees that market for Hubbard from his bass boat, was involved in a contest once that was so successful, that the competitor’s GM was quoted in the paper saying that basically, it wasn’t fair. It was a promotion that kind of touched on the “If I win the lottery, I’m going to…” dreams and wish. You got this catalogue of potential prizes that you could pick from if you won. Kind of like The Last Contest which will forever be the biggest contest in US Radio history. KIK-FM is doing it as the Ultimate Contest and has sold in clients. Score.
