“Our Customers Don’t Listen To The Radio”
There is one possible to parry that.
I worked at a station where the argument was “We don’t want teens!”
The very wise Sales Manager who’d actually gone out and met our listeners, knew that was not an accurate assessment of the audience. She would always give these people tickets to our more “adult” movie screenings. Something like “Silence Of The Lambs”. We would intentionally make sure that 13 year-old girls were not getting these tickets at things like remotes. And then Chris would go and say hi to the potential clients after the lights came back up and point out that, “You know how these people got the tickets? They won them on the air and at our sales appearances…”
It didn’t always work but it worked often enough that it became a strategy. (Our Teen numbers WERE insane because we were the only station that had NKOTB tickets for the three local shows they did in 18 months.)
Valentines In July
It’s fun to mix and match holiday promotions.
One of the stations has John Mayer tickets for a concert next February and they, “Don’t want to do something generic.”
So…they’re giving you a Valentine present for your significant other so there will be no excuse to forget. Again. “And we know you have no impulse control. A gift card to a restaurant? It’d be used by Labor Day.”
13 Deeds
There wouldn’t be a station (or two) in every market doing Christmas Wish, if it didn’t work.
But people have wishes the other 11 months of the year and 106.1 Chez-FM in Ottawa is doing 13 good deeds, in partnership with the Ottawa Police Department. 13 Deeds | CHEZ 106
So far, they’ve:
- Helped out a listener with a new roof
- Did “Free Gas Friday”
- Raised $10,000 For The Ottawa Humane Society
- Gave away a car
- Fed Fathers Day dinner to families at the Ronald
- Bought groceries
- Cleaned up a park
- Sent kids to camp
- And hosted a lunch for 500 Amazon employees
