The $10,000 Pumpkin Drop
Letterman did all our research for us: people love to see pumpkins destroyed. If there's a prize, then that's a bonus. But really, all we care about is the visual, the splat and the mess, and of course, the video.
Fan Friday
This was a six week promotion at The Edge in Toronto last winter Tell the station why you’re a Super Fan and have it rebranded in your name and you run it for a day. Plus get paid for it.
You don’t need to do it verbatim. It’s like having cheerleaders take over on a Thursday night. Or the iProm promotion. Take the concept and mold it into whatever you feel comfortable doing, without chlorinating it down to just being a slogan.
Who Wouldn’t Want To See These Every Time They’re At The Market
The first station I ever saw get their own lottery ticket was Kiss in Boise…and it was just a long bomb to the end zone…”What’s the worst that could happen?”…request. My memory was that there was promotion and benefit for Steve Kicklighter’s “Live For 175” annual campaign against child abuse.
And now iHeart in Connecticut has their own branded $2 scratchers.

To ignore it sends a message that you’re operating in some parallel universe where unicorns frolic in the surf while happy trolls bathe in chocolate fountains.

Some of the stations have thrown themselves into holidays with themes like “Love Week” (Valentines) and “Toy Week” (Christmas). And a few intrepid shows have done Halloweek. Just something different every morning. Why? Why not? This isn’t Rocket Science: it’s Radio. Plus, when the other station rolls out a topic on the 31st, you’ll have already owned the holiday. And again, look at TV programming and how they’ll ratchet it up. Mix it up. Vary the pitch count;
- Something with costumes (retro, homemade vs purchased, squinty plastic eye holes)
- Something warm and fuzzy
- Something paranormalish. Or even singlenormalish
- Something with pumpkins
- Something with candy (poll, taste test, social media,
So, grab a calendar and plug one of these in each day, the 25th to 29th
