A Great Charity Will Make A Great Drive
I took some friends to the Chet Buchanan event a few years ago and one of them, who basically runs Catholic Charities for the Twin Cities, kinda grilled Chet on the toys and what kind of system he had for distributing them. He had all the answers and explained how the massive number of toys actually get to the kids who need them.
Impressed, she went to Target and whipped out her plastic.
Hot 98.1 in Greenville has zeroed in on a great organization that provides shelter and resources for abused kids, has a wish list from the charity and people can purchase remotely and ship straight to them or drop them off.
Pay For Play
One of the best and easiest cash generators for charity has always been to sell requests. Mix in Cincy has done it (and yes, I paid to hear “Fascinated” by Company B) and Newcap in Edmonton raised close to $100,000 over a weekend for Katrina relief. The Breeze in Edmonton is playing Christmas music and are selling songs from 3 to 7 every Friday for a different weekly charity.
News Flash: People Still Use Phones
Oldies 96.7 has been doing a call in contest for cash. Last Thursday they logged 32,032, which doubled their previous record.
Play For View
Radio does contests. I like Games. Monty Hall played Games. Occasional zonk which means the winners are bigger, more exciting and less expected.
Trips are great prizes. They're usually money-can't-buy prizes like going to sit in a soundcheck with Bruno Mars in Vegas. Or what K-Rock in Kingston did with ""Two Tickets To Paradise": a winner and guest won a trip anywhere in the world. Which is better sounding then "a $10,000 travel voucher", which is what it was.
Trips as an umbrella promotion are always big. January Jetaways. Trip A Day. KOB-FM in Albuquerque did a weekly Fall Fantasy Flyaway and the digital stats were staggering. And they were brilliant in that they started with Flyaway #7.
Most radio stations will post a wacky photo of a plane as the logo for the contest.
Go to airline or hotel or travel websites: no goofy cartoon photo of a plane. Lots and lots of extremely great quality photos of cool destinations. Because they want to hook ya.
If you HAD a weekly trip in January, what if you did Play For View? A big colorful photo of the waves pounding the beach on Cayman. That's what we're playing for this week. Next week? A shot of a couple in the midst of a packed dance floor: Vegas.
