1) Where are you from?
I'm actually from the south of Holland, but living in Amsterdam for four years now.
2) How did you first get your start?
It depends on what you mean by start. If you mean D, I started off about five years ago, I worked under a different name in small bars and clubs and then about four years ago, I started Sam Feldt. I got signed to Spinnin' within that year. For me, it was amazing and it still is amazing.
3) One of your first releases that did well was "Midnight Hearts" and quickly from there, at least in the U.S. you put out "Show Me Love." What made you decide to remake such an iconic song?
I was actually browsing on YouTube and pretty much bored, when I stumbled upon this great cover on Kimberly Ann's channel, doing "Show Me Love." I was captivated by her voice, and thought this is really good. It's something else, I mean, it's the same song but done in such a completely different way that it's yeah, you know it's different. That inspired me to get in touch with her and contact my record label, and get the parts for it and start working on a whole new song. That's how we got together and the version came about.
4) In 2016 you released the very successful single, "Summer On You" with Lucas & Steve featuring Wulf, which went Platinum in The Netherlands and "Runaways" with Deepend featuring Teemu. As the year was drawing to a close you released "What About The Love.".\
Yes that's the new one. The video has already gotten over a million views. I'm satisfied with that. There's so much new music on the shelves for me that I will probably have an album this year.
5) I'm hearing possibly a song called "Mint Tea?"
Exactly. I recently sat down with VASSY for an interview with SiriusXM and she loves mint tea, so we came up with the idea to make a song around mint tea - LOL
6) That should be very interesting and I look forward to hearing it. Back to 2017 ... do you see the album happening?
Right now I have 23 songs to finish. We are in the process of A&R and perfecting those tracks to get the album together. I think before the album I might release one or two singles. As you mentioned. I just released "What About The Love." I have so much music that I want to get out that I have to plan it out and talk with the labels.
7) During this past year's ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) you threw a pool party. October, chilly weather, that doesn't seem to scream pool party...
Yes! So it's indoors first of all. Music is always about bringing that summer vibe to the world. Also since it's ADE and it's cold outside, but my music fits the best tropical environment. So I tried to recreate that and I sold out the first ADE Pool Party! It was great!
8) Are you touring?
I have been. I toured the States and Canada with my good friend Bakermat. We basically sold out every room. My favorite city to hang around is San Francisco because it's so chill, it's clean. For me, I come from the south of Holland and I'm a farmer boy. New York, L.A., they're great cities for me, but for me they are very confusing. San Francisco is a bit more easy for me to navigate. I love all the U.S. crowds to play for.
9) What's the biggest difference between Amsterdam and the U.S.?
Good question. When you look at the tours and the shows, you guys in the U.S. live up to the shows a lot more. Weeks before, you plan it out, you search out what you want to go with. You basically change your profile pix to a logo of the festival. So you're living up to it a lot more. Then when the DJ who you want to see plays, you give it all. People go crazy. Here in Amsterdam, it's a bit more to build up to get their attention and then maybe, if you do a really good job, they'll listen to you. That's why it's a lot more fun to play in the U.S.
10) You do a lot of traveling and you work on a lot of music, what do you do on your down time to relax?
I'm like an old man, dude. I love a good glass of wine, watching Netflix on Sunday with some blue cheese on the side. I love spending time at home when I get the chance.
Bonus Questions
What would your fans be surprised to hear you listening to?
That's another good question. A lot of '80s stuff. I'm a big '80s guy. That's actually my guilty pleasure. Journey, Toto, stuff like that.
I was out with Cees van der Zwan from Spinnin' when I was in Amsterdam recently and we went for breakfast. He said I should order a couple of pancakes. In the U.S. you get a small stack of them. In Holland they bring out this gigantic pancake the size of a pizza. I said to him you want me to get a few of them!?
We learned in Holland when we were little that you know, your mom is in the kitchen for hours just making these pancakes, and we could eat five or six of them. That's how we get fat!
Aside from pancakes in Amsterdam, is there a delicacy that we should try?
If you are going to be at ADE next year, and I'll assume you are going to get drunk, which would be a wise bet while the conference and festival is on, there's a dish called Kapsalon. Basically it's grilled meat that they put in a box and then they put fries on it, cheese and garlic sauce, hot as they put it in the oven and it's really greasy, really fat, but so delicious. Go and buy it.
