1. What got you interested in radio?
As a child, I used the radio as a mental escape from my chaotic home environment. The upbeat voices that came through to me gave me comfort and I felt a connection with the radio hosts. As I grew up, I realized I wanted to be that friendly voice for other people.
2. What makes the Fort Wayne market unique? How does this compare to other markets you have worked at?
Fort Wayne is a terrific city and radio market because listeners are passionate and really love their radio stations. Since day one, I've felt welcomed with open arms by everyone in the city. This past year they've invited me to host many important community events, join a board of directors for an organization, and grow my television skills with hosting opportunities on the local CW affiliate. This is a city full of people supporting each other's success. It's what makes Fort Wayne so unique! I'm extremely grateful for the opportunities I've found in this city.
3. What is it about your show that you feel really makes it cut through?
My show is upbeat, full of inspiration, and most of all it's real. I draw my content from my own life, and my listener's life experiences - the good and the bad - but always about the positive lessons we've learned. That's where I've found my place in the market and I've found my community of listeners are really enjoying the flow of the show.
4. What do you view as the most important issue facing radio today?
Oh boy, just one issue? (Kidding). I would say it's the lack of investment in talent. Like I said earlier, I fell in love with, and still love radio because of the bonds I feel with the personalities. These talented individuals didn't just wake up being good on the radio, they were coached. I'm fortunate to have great mentors who constantly share their knowledge and advice with me. I'm lucky because I know not everyone in radio has that kind of support system.
5. How are you using social media to market your station?
It's the best way to communicate with my audience. I share my life with them and I'm able to follow their lives each day. It's not only the best way to market the radio station, it's also where I get majority of the content for my show. If you want to follow along on my adventure....I'll take you backstage at concerts, to dinners at one of many fantastic Fort Wayne local restaurants, art shows, or with me on my weekly yoga classes. Social media has been a great tool to get to know the people of Fort Wayne and for them to get to know me better, too.
6. What type of features do you run on your show?
I like to start the day and the week with positivity. Every Monday, life coach Dan Mason, joins the show for a segment we call "Motivation Monday." I'm so grateful for all the lessons and advice Dan has shared with my audience. Together we all have learned so much. In addition to that, I do a quote of the Day" each morning, and sprinkle in empowering topics for women to enjoy.
7. How do you prep yourself for your radio shift?
I take care of myself mentally, through meditation and physically at the gym. When I feel good, it comes across on the air. I like to get up early, research what's happening in Fort Wayne and around the world, and start to build my show for the day. Oh, and a few good jams to help me vibe in the morning are helpful too!
8. How are you using technologies in your personal life to listen to music, and what observations have you made about how today's listeners use technology?
I'm just like listeners, I listen to the local radio stations and stream Apple Music. I know there is competition out there, and it's real competition, but each service offers something different and I'm focused on making my show the best it can be. My favorite messages are often from listeners out of my market, who stream my show. I love technology!
9. What's the most rewarding promotion you've ever been a part of?
This is truly a tough one. I'm big on community advocacy. There have been so many wonderful promotions created at the stations I've worked at. Giving back is a NECESSITY in life and in your career.
10. What advice would you give people new to the business?
Work hard. Network. Work hard. Surround yourself with encouraging people. Did I mention, work hard?
Don't expect success to be handed to you. Work hard, and do your best work on EVERY task, no matter how big or small. I've found if you prove you're hungry for success and you're a dependable worker, you'll be rewarded. Again, networking is HUGE! This will help you grow your skills and understand the multiple layers of this industry. Finally, trust your vision and put yourself out there. You'll never succeed at anything if you don't at least try...so...jump!
Bonus Questions
Tell us what music we would find on your playlist right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
Music that connects to my soul! Everything from Erykah Badu, to Mary J., Marvin Gaye, Maxwell, Chaka Khan, Sade, Yuna, Jill Scott ...you get the picture. You'll also find rap/hip hop (Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Biggie, Bryson Tiller, Big Sean, and A Tribe Called Quest) and blues, in the mix as well. I love my playlists because there is something so beautiful about the vibe you feel with this music. I have so much respect for the way these artists let you into their world and the connection you experience with the lyrics.
