1) Who do you consider your radio mentors?
Paul Drew, Bill Gavin, Bob Kieve, Buzz Bennett, and all my teachers at College of San Mateo and San Francisco State University.
2) What Got You Interested In Radio?
I did a lot of performing (singing on local TV and radio around 4-5 years of age, and by nine I was hooked on Top 40 radio). I couldn't turn it off, and the DJ's just seemed so connected to the music and the artists.
3) How did you get your on-air name?
I got the nick name "The Duke" from a high school girlfriend. She actually had business cards printed for me that read, "Duke Of The Discs." But I decided to shorten it to "The Duke." She always said I'd never forget her. She was right.
4) Name the artist act (living or dead) you'd love to meet and why?
Hands down it'd have to be Elvis. No...not Costello (although I dig his music). More than 50 years after he became Rock N' Roll's most successful star, he's still idolized by millions, and his popularity is multi-generational. The Duke meeting The King would be a dream come true!
5) Who was your most memorable artist you've ever interviewed?
Safe to say, it'd have to be John Lennon & Yoko Ono and the afternoon we spent together on December 8, 1980.
Approximately six hours after we said our goodbyes, John was murdered in front of the Dakota, their apartment building where the interview was conducted.
6) What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
I'm torn between a nuclear physicist and a circus clown? But most likely, I'd be teaching high school history and social studies.
7) Do you read.....everything? Books, Magazines, etc. Nothing? What's your favorite reading material?
I try to get my hands on every pop culture magazine available. I also read Sports Illustrated. For Books I love biographies. I just finished Tom Brokaw's book "Boom." I highly recommend it as there are some amazing stories.
8) What advice would you give people new to the business?
Have a clear understanding in the basics of radio programming. Be skilled in integrating new technologies with radio. Also, meet and network with as many people as possible.
9) How do you stay in touch with the latest music trends?
I've got the perfect team to help out. I've got three kids in college and they all have varied tastes in pop music. They're always discovering someone new they want their "old man" to check out.
10) How did you get your job with KFRC?
This is one of my favorite stories. I was visiting our sister stations Alice and Live 105 in the San Francisco CBS complex. My cell phone rang as I was heading down the street in front of the building. A few minutes later I was sitting in my car with VP of Programming Mike Preston and KFRC PD Tim Jordan. They revealed to me that a meeting had concluded with CBS President Dan Mason and San Francisco Market Manager Doug Harvill, and that after being off the air for over a year KFRC was about to be re-launched on the 106.9 frequency. They wanted to know if I'd be interested in talking about doing mornings. Well, thanks to the very understanding management at Caroline/EMI Records who understood my passion for both radio, and my history with KFRC, a deal was struck, and a little more than a year ago the team of Dave & Celeste was born.
