NAME:Ryan ReidTITLE:PD/MD/Midday HostMARKET:Sioux City, IACOMPANY:Clear ChannelBORN:I was born right here in good ole Sioux City, IA in the early 80s :)RAISED:... Once again.. Sioux City (I'm not much of a drifter)
Please outline your radio career so far:
KKMA/Sioux City, IA - (11/99 to 3/01) (Oldies at the time, I started running IMUS)
KSUX/Sioux City, IA - (3/00 to 5/05) (Country)
KGLI/Sioux City, IA - 6/05 to present (Hot AC)1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
My very first job was working part time at KKMA in Sioux City (Kool 99.5). I hounded Dave Ruden the PD at the time for 2 months; I called him every other day and begged for work. I started out running the board for Imus and Iowa State Men's Basketball. No voice work other than legal ID's during the ballgame and weathers during Imus! My early influences were my first couple of PD's: Dave Ruden, Bob Rounds, and Willie Clark.
2) Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff?
My top four personalities are (in no particular order) Travis Moon at K-102 in Minneapolis, Willie Clark at KSTP-AM, Minneapolis and Todd and Tyler at Z-92 in Omaha and the great Phil Hendrie. The day he retired was one of the saddest days in broadcast history for me.
3) Where do you see the industry and yourself five years from now?
I think five years from now radio will start to bounce back and become the premiere place to hear music. With the growth of HD radio we will see prices of the receivers go down and more people buying them as more markets add this service. Personally, I hope to either still be here doing a kick ass job programming KG, or working as an OM of some cluster in the Northeast, either way I hope I am still working in radio in some shape or form.
4) What are music meetings like at your station?
I get together with my OM Rob Powers on Monday mornings and show him my playlist. He looks at it tells me what he think I should change, we argue, and by the end of the conversation we reach an agreement on what songs should be in what categories etc.
5) How do you stay in touch with the latest music trends?
Every Monday morning I comb the Internet for any kind of research I can find. From All Access to MMR or what people are download from iTunes to Wal Mart CD sales. I follow the Hot AC chart pretty closely but I try to incorporate some flavor...
6) How have music file sharing services, affected the way you program to your audience?
I think that listeners have more eclectic taste now that they can buy 10 different songs from different artist for the same price 10 years ago it would cost to by 1 CD from 1 artist. I think that this has spilled over into the music charts because the line between Country and Hot Ac or Rock and Hot Ac have really blurred.
7) Tell us what music we would find on your I-Pod right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
In my car I have the Wreckers, Pat Green: Three Days [Grace], and John Mayer, "Any Given Thursday." At home, I have Carrie Underwood "Some Hearts," O.A.R "Mixed tape," and Jack Johnson "In Between Dreams."
8) Please describe the best or worst promotion you've ever been part of?
I had a three-hour remote one time at on open house for a heating and AC business. No one came except for three people and they came for the free hot dogs. It was in the middle of summer and it was close to 100 degrees outside, and for some reason I don't think the AC was working inside the shop.
9) What is the most rewarding promotion or activity your station has ever been involved with to benefit the community or a charity?
In November I had the chance to fill in for my morning man Mark Hahn and co-host our annual Children's Miracle Network radio-thon along with my morning gal Rita. Together over three days and 36 hours on the radio together we raised well of $30,000 for CMN.
10) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Always remember there is someone that wants your job and will work twice as hard to get it.
Bonus Questions
1) What other stations and markets do you like to keep track of?
WMMX-FM Dayton, KHMX/Houston, and WMYX Milwaukee, WI.
2) How did you get your on-air name?
I use my first name and middle name; I planned on using that name for four years before I got my first gig.
3) What format does not exist that should? Would it work?
The late 90's needs a format. There is a lot of stuff that was pretty good from 1996-2000 that doesn't get airplay anywhere. There was a lot of bad stuff too, but I think there is an audience out there somewhere for that time period.
4) Do you have any good stalker stories? Misty requests? "Fatal Attractions?"
The cluster I worked at a few years ago had a talk station. They had a listener that swore the morning man was bugging her house, broadcasting her thoughts, and stealing her Internet. She ended up coming up to the station one Saturday morning, when he wasn't even there, and shooting up a couple station vehicles about 50 ft outside of studio. Good times.
