Please outline your radio career so far:
WXXX/Burlington, VT - 1987-1990
WRQN/Toledo, OH - 1990-1996
KGOR/Omaha, NE - 1996-1998
WRCL/Richmond, VA - 1998-2001
WHTT/Buffalo, NY - 2001-Present1) How did you get your on-air name?
After using everything from "J.J. Riley" to "Captain Morgan," I just looked at my driver's license for inspiration.
2) What was your favorite station to listen to when you were a kid?
94 Rock in Syracuse. I'd flip on my Radio Shack FM booster to pull in Big Mike, Howie Castle, Michael Michaels, and Tommy Nast.
3) For someone vacationing in your market, what one thing would you say they "must see"?
It's a toss up between the natural wonder of Niagara Falls, or The Anchor Bar (where Buffalo Wings were invented).
4) What's been the biggest difference from being a jock to being a PD?
When you're a jock, you worry about your show. When you're a PD, you worry about EVERYTHING.
5) What are your thoughts on Syndication and Voice-Tracking?
It's a reality of today. A voice-tracked or syndicated show is only a weakness if you let it be.
6) If you are wearing more hats this year than last, what area is suffering and how are you handling that?
I have a quote on my desk that says, "The secret of your success is determined by your daily agenda."
Time management is more important than ever and it's critical to make sure you're making the most impact with everything you do every minute of the day.
7) How do you interact with your sales staff?
We work together every day to find solutions for clients and create promotions that help the station.
8) How much of your day is spent working with your station Web site?
Probably about 25%, but it could easily be all day, every day.
9) Tell us what music we would find on your I-Pod right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
Every Del Amitri song ever recorded. Funny thing is, I hated them the first time I heard them, but after seeing them live at a little club in Boston, I was hooked.
10) What advice would you give people new to the business?
Be creative. This is a time of reinvention, and you never know who's going to have the next great idea.
Bonus Questions
1) What is the most popular giveaway item at your station?
We just did our second annual "Ladies Night" party. These are easily the most sought after tickets we've given away over the last several years.
2) Favorite artist you have met?
Benny Mardones was a trip. My wife's jealous that I met Cher.
3) What do you do in your spare time?
I love to cook! Baked Ziti sounds pretty good right about now!
4) What is it about our industry that keeps you wanting to do it for a living?
It's always changing. Every day is different and that keeps it interesting.
