1) How would you describe your first radio gig?
One word...Unpaid!! LOL! But I knew this was what I wanted to do. I have an insane passion for music. So I stuck around until someone decided I was worthy of a paycheck.
2) Who do you consider your radio mentors?
Wow, I have been so fortunate to have been able to work with some amazing people. Two guys I consider mentors are Forrest Letson and EJ Tyler. The first two people I ever met in radio. I worked with both at KLLY 95.3 in Bakersfield. EJ is a PD like no other! He always encouraged me to reach farther and to push myself. I worked with Forrest on the night show on KLLY. He really took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. I am so blessed that he believed in me. To this day, I still call him when I need advice!
3) What do you like best about working in this format?
It's the music I love listening to. So it makes it easy to be passionate about the artists and the music.
4) What other stations and markets do you like to monitor?
I like to monitor stations in Nashville. Being Music Director, I like to hear the flow of their music and what songs they are pushing.
5) Your thoughts on Syndication and Voice-Tracking?
I'm not a big fan of voice tracking! I hate trying to do a five hour show in 45 minutes. There's not the luxury of having that time in the studio to prep, or find new stories that might pop up.
6) What do you enjoy most about music scheduling?
I love scheduling music. We've got a mixture of Hot AC, AC, and Urban artist. It's a fun challenge trying to schedule so many different sounding artists into a nice flow.
7) What are your three favorite artists or songs of this year?
I am loving the new Kanye West "Love Lockdown". The beat is insane! That is definitely one of my favorites. I'm also really enjoying the latest Nickelback "Gotta Be Somebody." Obviously, Nickelback has always been a power house in the music industry, but this song is one of their best...hands down. I've also found this year that I have a crazy crush on Lil' Wayne. Anything he's collaborated on this year...but my favorite is "Let it Rock" with Kevin Rudolf. Awesome mix of rock and rap!
8) Describe the relationship you have with your fellow co-workers? How do you motivate your staff to do better? How do they motivate you?
I've never worked at a station where all the jocks get along! How crazy is that?! I mean, it's not uncommon to see us all hanging out at the PD's desk telling jokes, laughing, throwing things across the cubicles, dancing on the desks. (No really, this all does happen. Makes you want to work with us, huh?) We play hard and we work just as hard. We motivate each other!
9) What is the most rewarding promotion or activity your station has ever been involved with to benefit the community or a charity?
WUHU just finished our very first radio-thon back in September. We teamed up with The Children's Miracle Network and the Kentucky Children's Hospital and raised over $12,000! I was such a great way to give back to the children and families in our community. After working non stop for 32 hours, it really made our air staff a stronger team.
10) What advice would you give people new to the business?
Be a sponge. Soak up everything. And never ever hesitate to ask lots of questions! It's the best way to learn.
Bonus Questions
1) Which new artists do you expect to still be playing in five years?
Leona Lewis! Her sound is incredible!
2) What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A singer!
3) What is your favorite TV show?
The Ghost Whisperer. Can you believe they killed off Jim?!? I'm so upset. I don't think I'll ever recover.
4) You just won the lotto and you have your boss on the line. What's the first thing that you would say?
"Brooke Summers...we're going shopping!!"
