Are your basics covered or are you so tied up with all the extra duties created by recession-caused staff reductions that you are missing some of the essentials? Here are a couple of things....
Sales Managers, are you making sure you are meeting with your staff every Monday morning to plan the week -- and every Friday afternoon to debrief and give thought starters for weekend planning? Do you meet at least once a week with each seller to keep him/her close and get a feel for where their minds are?
Program Directors, are you still spending quality, individual time with each personality to review airchecks? Do you use the meeting to get a feel for where they are emotionally and psychologically, or are you rushing through it because you have to get to something important like that report for the boss?
Always remember, your job as a manager includes knowing and understanding your staff. There is nothing more important than this during hard times. We are all busy with BS these days, but we can't forget the reason we have the job is to put compelling content on the air and use the audience created to move people into our clients' businesses.
Periodically, you need to look at what you want the end result to be and confirm your efforts all are pushing in that direction. When you lose sight of the target you are in danger of being subject to the old phrase, "spinning your wheels."
