Alternative Top 50 Scorecard: St. Louis Lone #1

RADIOCRUNCH Pres. ANTHONY ACAMPORA takes a look, exclusively on ALL ACCESS, at the state of Alternative radio in the top 50 markets.

Early PPM results show great promise for the Alternative format. The format has struggled in a number of places over the last few years -- with many heritage stations in the format down to some of their lowest numbers in years.

On a positive note, the early PPM data from PHILADELPHIA and HOUSTON shows great results for rock formats. One new Alternative station (WRLL/PHILADELPHIA) was very likely created because of PPM. However, there has been a lot of downside, with fewer rock stations in a number of markets, Alternative has seen some erosion. In reviewing the SPRING 2007 ratings book for the top 50 ARBITRON markets, only EMMIS owned KPNT/ST. LOUIS was #1 among adults 18-34.

A total of five stations (including KPNT) finished top three 18-34. The others: CBS WBCN/BOSTON, CLEAR CHANNEL WRZX/INDIANAPOLIS, CLEAR CHANNEL WWDC (DC101)/WASHINGTON and SIMMONS Alternative KXRK/SALT LAKE CITY.

The question and hope as we move forward for the format will be to hopefully see a resurgence once PPM comes.
