As ALL ACCESS wraps up its look at the top-50 markets this fall, RADIOCRUNCH Pres. ANTHONY ACAMPORA takes a look inside SALT LAKE CITY, GREENSBORO, RALEIGH, NASHVILLE and more.
Greensboro: Entercom Roars; 'KZL Soars
ENTERCOM continues to be the leading operator in GREENSBORO. The company scored four of the top stations 18-49 and three of the top four 25-54. Meanwhile, DICK Top 40 WKZL had a stellar book. 'KZL remained a solid second 18-34 but saw solid share growth. However, the station did move from 3rd to 1st 18-49 and held in 3rd place 25-54.
ENTERCOM, however, remained the top group. Urban AC WQMG, Urban WJMH, Country WPAW and Adult Hits WSMW scored the 2nd through 5th positions 18-49. With 25-54 adults, WQMG landed the top position, followed by WPAW, WKZL, WSMW and CLEAR CHANNEL Regional Mexican WGBT (LA PRECIOSA). Ironically, "LA PRECIOSA" turns out to be the highest-rated CLEAR CHANNEL station in all three demos, ranking 3rd 18-34, 6th 18-49 and 5th 25-54.
The Country battle between WPAW and legendary CLEAR CHANNEL outlet WTQR is leaning favorable to WPAW. Check out the rankings:
WPAW: 18-34 (#5), 18-49 (#4), 25-54 (#2)
WTQR: 18-34 (#9), 18-49 (#8) 25-54 (#6)As a matter of fact, WTQR trailed Urban AC sister 18-49 (#7). CLEAR CHANNEL AC WMAG slipped from 6th to 10th 25-54 this book.
Nashville: Clear Channel, South Central Share Wins; Citadel Country Champ
FALL results for NASHVILLE have the market split -- with CLEAR CHANNEL leading the way on the younger end, but SOUTH CENTRAL grabbing two of the top four 25-54.
SOUTH CENTRAL AC WJXA remained the #1 station among adults 25-54 for a third straight book. CUMULUS Urban AC WQQK moved from 4th to 2nd, while CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WUBT vaulted from 6th to 3rd. SOUTH CENTRAL Adult Hits WCJK (Jack-FM) slid from 2nd to 4th, and CITADEL Sports WGFX climbed from 8th to 5th and rounds out the top five.
None of the market's Country stations landed among the top five 25-54, and that demo has a new champ. Check out the results between CITADEL's WKDF, CLEAR CHANNEL's WSIX and CUMULUS outlet WSM-FM.
18-34: WKDF (#4), WSIX (#6-tie), WSM-FM (#8-tie)
18-49: WKDF (#6), WSIX (#7), WSM-FM (#10)
25-54: WKDF (#6), WSIX (#8), WSM-FM (#11)Other notes in the 25-54 cell: CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WRVW moved from 10th to 7th, with the aforementioned WSIX sliding from 3rd to 8th. CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rock WNRQ dropped from 5th to 9th and is off the 2nd place ranking it had a year earlier. CUMULUS Talk WWTN rounded out the top 10.
In the 18-49 cell, WUBT was a dominant #1, pacing well ahead of WJXA, which leaped from 4th to 2nd. WRVW inched up from 4th to 3rd, trading spaces with WQQK. WCJK dipped from 2nd to 5th. WKDF moved up to 6th place (from 8th), while WSIX slipped 4th to 7th. WGFX climbed to 8th place with its best shares in five books. WNRQ dropped from 7th to 9th, and WSM-FM rounded out the top 10.
Oklahoma City: "Twister" Rolls Through; Renda Big 25-54
CLEAR CHANNEL Country KTST (TWISTER) took over the top spot 18-49 and 25-54 in OKLAHOMA CITY in the fall, succeeding CITADEL Active Rock KATT, which slipped to 2nd 18-49 and 4th 25-54. However, it should be noted that KATT remained the market leader in the 18-34 cell. KATT has one more challenge on its hands moving forward -- CLEAR CHANNEL recently shifted Alternative KHBZ to Active Rock.
In OKC's 25-54 war, RENDA Classic Rock KRXO leaped from 3rd to 2nd, while sister AC KMGL moved from 4th to 3rd. CITADEL saw Hot AC KYIS move into the 5th spot, while RENDA Classic Hits KOMA slipped to #6. However, RENDA did land three of the top-six 25-54. CITADEL Sports WWLS climbed from 9th to 7th. CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KJYO (KJ103) dropped to eighth, PERRY Urban KVSP was 9th, while CLEAR CHANNEL News/Talk KTOK surged from 16th to 10th.
CLEAR CHANNEL is clearly dominating the Country battle in OKLAHOMA CITY now with KTST leading the way. Sister KXXY also has pulled ahead of TYLER Country KKNG. Take a look:
25-54: KTST (#1), KXXY (#11), KKNG (#14-tie)
18-49: KTST (#1), KXXY (#11), KKNG (#16)
18-34: KTST (#3), KXXY (#10-tie), KKNG (#17-tie)In the 18-49 battle, KTST and KATT are 1-2. KRXO surges from 8th to 3rd, knocking KJYO to 4th. KMGL moves into the top 5. KYIS slips from 4th to 6th, ahead of CITADEL Rhythmic KKWD, which slides from 5th to 7th. KVSP dropped from 7th to 8th, WWLS held in 9th, and TYLER Regional Mexican KTUZ was 10th.
In the 18-34 demo, KATT was #1, but KJYO was still a solid second. With KHBZ moving more Active, this could put CLEAR CHANNEL in position to steal away the top spot. KTST lost a few shares but remained 3rd. KKWD and KVSP tied for 4th.
Providence: PRO-FM, WWLI Dominate For Citadel; CC Stations Strong 25-54
CITADEL heritage Top 40 WPRO-FM (PRO-FM) and AC WWLI remained the two top stations in key demos, while CLEAR CHANNEL also scored solid numbers in the 25-54 cell.
Among adults 25-54, WWLI held on to the top spot. However, it was a tremendous book for PRO-FM, which surged from 4th to 2nd. CLEAR CHANNEL Rock WHJY vaulted from 7th to 3rd, moving past sister Classic Hits WWBB, which fell from 2nd to 4th. ENTERCOM Sports WEEI-FM dropped from 3rd to 5th, tying with HALL Country WCTK. CLEAR CHANNEL Hot AC WSNE dipped from 6th to 7th. DAVIDSON Tropical WKKB moved into the top 10, rising from 11th to 8th. CITADEL News/Talk WPRO-A was 9th, while BROWN Alternative WBRU placed 10th.
In the 18-49 demo, PRO-FM moved into the #1 position (up from #2 in the SUMMER), knocking WWLI into 2nd place. WHJY, WEEI, and WCTK round out the top 5. WWBB moved up from 7th to 6th, while CITADEL Rhythmic WWKX moved from 8th to 7th. WSNE slid from 6th to 8th, while WKKB also leaped into the top 10 here, moving from 11th to 9th. WBRU rounded out the top 10 as well.
CITADEL really owned the 18-34 cell with PRO-FM #1, WWKX tied for 2nd (with CLEAR CHANNEL's WHJY) and WWLI ranked 4th. WBRU and WEEI tied for 5th (both moving up from 7th in the summer).
Raleigh: Radio One Remains Dominant; WQDR, WRAL-FM Remain Strong
RADIO ONE remains a dominant player in THE TRIANGLE as their trifecta of African-American-targeted FMs remain unchallenged in that arena. In the 25-54 cell, RADIO ONE Urban WQOK ranked 2nd, Urban AC WFXC was 4th and Gospel WNNL was 5th, giving RADIO ONE three of the top-five stations. However, the top spot went to CURTIS heritage Country outlet WQDR, which moved up from 2nd in the SUMMER. Another heritage station, CAPITOL Hot AC WRAL-FM, tied WQOK for 2nd place.
Other notes from the 25-54 demo: CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WDCG (G105) fell from 3rd to 6th. Classic Hits WRVA inched up to 7th place, tying CURTIS Regional Mexican WYMY. Two other CURTIS stations rounded out the top 10: Rock WBBB was 9th and News/Talk WPTF was 10th, giving CURTIS four in the top 10.
Among adults 18-49, WQOK moved into the top spot, followed by WQDR. WRAL surged from 6th to 3rd, while the SUMMER 2007 champ, G105 dropped all the way to 4th. WYMY held in 5th place, followed by WFXC (4th to 6th), WBBB (9th to 7th), WNNL (holds in 8th), WRVA (10th to 9th), and CLEAR CHANNEL Country (12th to 10th).
We also have a new 18-34 champ, as WQOK unseats G105 in the FALL. CURTIS grabs the next three with WYMY, WQDR and WBBB.
Two stations that flipped formats in 2007 are not gaining much traction. CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC WKSL dropped to 13th 18-34 and 12th 18-49 and 25-54. CAPITOL flipped Country WCMC to Sports and has is no better than 17th in any demo.
Salt Lake City: KXRK Tops Younger End; Bonneville Strong 25-54
SALT LAKE CITY remains one of America's most competitive markets ... and this book was no different. With 30 stations showing up in the book, there is always a lot of shifting going on.
SIMMONS scored a win with Alternative KXRK grabbing the #1 spot among adults 18-34 and 18-49. Younger formats have always done very well in this vibrant market. In the 18-34 cell, CLEAR CHANNEL captured the #2 position. Three stations tied for 3rd place: MILLCREEK Rhythmic KUUU, CLEAR CHANNEL Hot AC KJMY and BONNEVILLE AC KSFI. CITADEL saw AAA KENZ move from 8th to 6th, Rock KBER from 9th to 7th, while Country KUBL slipped from 6th to 8th. BONNEVILLE News/Talk KSL-AM & FM grabbed the rare feat of a top 10 finish in the 18-34 demo, rising to 9th place. KSOP INC. Country KSOP rounded out the top 10.
SLC is also the home to a plethora of Country stations. CITADEL has KUBL and KKAT. SIMMONS has KEGA. KSOP INC. has KSOP, and CLEAR CHANNEL flipped AAA KXRV in the fall. Here were the results by demo:
18-34: KUBL (#8), KSOP (#10), KEGA (#15), KKAT (#21), KXRV (#29)
18-49: KUBL (#5-tie), KSOP (#14), KEGA (#15), KKAT (#21), KXRV (#27-tie)
25-54: KUBL (#8), KSOP (#14), KEGA and KKAT (#16-tie), KXRV (#26)At this point, the market has become so saturated, only KUBL was able to post a top 5 ranking in any demo.
The holiday season brought a lot of CHRISTMAS music to UTAH's largest city -- and it also brought large ratings to the market's three AC stations. BONNEVILLE's KSFI ranked 2nd 25-54 (although it lost over a share). CLEAR CHANNEL AC KOSY surged from 12th to 3rd, while CITADEL's KBEE vaulted from 18th to 5th. The 25-54 winner though was KSL-AM & FM, one of two News/Talk facilities in the top 5. CLEAR CHANNEL's KNRS ranked #3.
Also in the 25-54 race was BONNEVILLE Classic Rock KRSP, which was 6th. KENZ moved from 10th to 7th. KUBL slipped to 8th. KBER dropped from 7th to 9th, but pulled ahead of KXRK, which despite huge younger demo numbers, fell from 6th to 10th 25-54.
Among 18-49 adults, KXRK was the champ. KSL-AM & FM moved up to 2nd, pushing KSFI down to a 3rd-place tie with KZHT. KJMY and KUBL tied for 5th (both were 3rd in the SUMMER). KNRS inched up to 7th. KOSY vaulted from 14th to 8th. KRSP held steady in 9th place, tying them with KBEE, who surged from 18th.
Two hot formats the last year or so have been Adult Hits and Rhythmic AC. SIMMONS is airing both, but not with the luck that it has seen in other markets. Adult Hits KJQN (Jack-FM) ranked 22nd 18-49 and 24th 25-54. Rhythmic AC KYMV (MOVIN') was 22nd 18-49 and 26th 25-54.
West Palm Beach: WRMF, WIRK, And WEAT Lead 25-54; WMBX Stellar Younger
While CBS and CLEAR CHANNEL own the big cluster shares in WEST PALM BEACH, it's independent operator PALM BEACH BROADCASTERS which tops the market 18-49 and 25-54 with Hot AC WRMF. The station retains the top spot it had in the SUMMER.
Meanwhile, CBS Country WIRK and AC WEAT grabbed the 2nd and 3rd spots 25-54. CLEAR CHANNEL placed 4th with Classic Hits WOLL, while Talk WZZR ranked 5th. CBS Urban AC WNEW moved from 9th to 6th, ahead of CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rock WKGR (5th to 7th). CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WLDI was 9th, and sister Soft AC WRLX was 10th (note that WRLX has since changed to Spanish Contemporary).
In the 18-49 demo, WRMF and WIRK took the top two spots, but WMBX placed 3rd. WLDI and WOLL tied for 4th, while WEAT fell to 6th. As a matter of fact, WEAT was one of the rare stations that went to holiday music that went down in rank in some demos. WZZR, WNEW, WKGR, and RADIO FIESTA Regional Mexican WWRF rounded out the top 10.
In 18-34, WMBX was a solid #1. WIRK did real well in the younger cell, leaping from 5th to 2nd, moving past WLDI and WRMF, which tied for 3rd. WEAT rounded out the top 5.
This is our final look inside the top 50 markets for the FALL. Keep checking back as we will doing special features on the FALL numbers with regard to format trends and more over the next few weeks.
