ARBITRON will not be releasing any markets TODAY due to the holiday honoring DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. However, RADIOCRUNCH President ANTHONY ACAMPORA spent his weekend analyzing demo data from the most recently released group of markets. Here are his findings:
ATLANTA: V103, COX, RADIO ONE Score Wins; New CC Stations Score Mixed Results
A year after CLEAR CHANNEL completely re-tooled its ATLANTA cluster, CUMULUS is getting set to make their moves in 2008. Meanwhile, CBS Urban WVEE (V103), three of COX's properties and two RADIO ONE properties scored major victories in the FALL book.
One year ago, CLEAR CHANNEL made wholesale changes to its ATLANTA cluster. Here's a look at where the stations ranked a year ago versus today in key demos:
Calls: WKLS
Format: Active Rock (formerly Classic Rock)
Share Change: 18-34 (+48%), 18-49 (+13%), 25-54 (-14%)WKLS shifted in a younger direction and relaunched as "Project 9-6-1." The station show huge growth 18-34 and has since chased CUMULUS Alternative WNNX (99X) out of the format. The station also showed moderate growth 18-49.
Calls: WUBL (formerly WLTM)
Format: Country (formerly AC)
Share Change: 18-34 (-25%), 18-49 (-39%), 25-54 (-40%)WUBL gave up its heritage position as the market's second (and softest) AC to become the third Country station. These numbers are compared to the all-CHRISTMAS format on WLTM one year ago. The 18-49 and 25-54 declines are quite sharp. WUBL dropped from 9th a year ago to 17th 25-54. Meanwhile, CITADEL's two Country outlets saw mixed results 25-54. WKHX dropped from 4th to 8th, but WYAY climbed from 21st to 15th year-to-year -- and the two stations' combined 25-54 shares were nearly identical. By shifting away from AC, however, it gave COX's WSB-FM an exclusive position (more on that below).
Calls: WBZY
Format: Regional Mexican (formerly Alternative)
Share Change: 18-34 (+19%), 18-49 (+35%), 25-54 (+12%)CLEAR CHANNEL took the best of Alternative WBZY and Classic Rock WKLS to create "Project 9-6-1" and definitely scored some victories. By shifting WBZY to Regional Mexican, it gave the marketplace its first full signal station reaching Atlanta's growing Mexican-American community -- and the stations saw gains across all three demos.
While WVEE continues to dominate overall (the station ranked #1 among adults 18-34, 18-49, and 25-54), COX had another solid book in the 25-54 cell. Urban AC WALR remained 2nd, News/Talk WSB-FM held on to 3rd, while AC WSB moved up from 5th to 4th. However, WSB surged from a tie for 7th just a year ago and is up 56% in share. COX Classic Rock WSRV ranked 7th, giving the company four of the top-seven stations in their home market.
RADIO ONE saw nice growth from Urban AC WAMJ and Gospel WPZE. WAMJ moved into the top five 25-54, while WPZE moved up to 6th. However, RADIO ONE did see Smooth AC WJZZ slide from 7th to 13th year-to-year.
Quietly gaining momentum is CBS AAA WZGC (DAVE-FM), which had a stellar book 25-54, rising from 14th to 9th.
The latest update from the top 40 battle in ATLANTA has CUMULUS-owned WWWQ (Q100) sliding from 5th to 8th 18-34, but still ahead of LINCOLN FINANCIAL Adult-leaning rival WSTR (STAR 94), which fell to 12th place. However, STAR 94 beat Q100 18-49. They were tied for 10th in the SUMMER. While STAR remained 10th, Q100 fell to 13th. In adults 25-54, WSTR ranked 9th to WWWQ's 12th. The move of Q100 from 100.5 to the more powerful 99.7 signal could change the landscape.
ATLANTA listeners love their hip-hop and R&B music. WVEE remained #1 18-34, while RADIO ONE Urban WHTA held on to second place, as COX Rhythmic WBTS moved from 4th to 3rd.
MIAMI: BEASLEY, COX Score Wins; UNIVISION, SBS Battle Heats Up
Both BEASLEY and COX scored key demo wins, while UNIVISION remains the dominant Spanish-language broadcaster in MIAMI-FT. LAUDERDALE.
BEASLEY Rhythmic WPOW (POWER 96) held on to the #1 position among 18-34 adults, but added to its trophy case by moving from 4th to 1st with adults 18-49. WPOW also moved into the top 10 25-54. Sister Country outlet WKIS scored nice gains across the board, and is up 36% from a year ago with adults 25-54.
COX landed three of the top-six spots in the 25-54 money demo. Urban AC WHQT (HOT 105) and AC WFLC remained #1 and #3 respectively this book despite small share declines. Urban WEDR held in 6th place and also remained flat in share. WFLC topped LINCOLN FINANCIAL rival WLYF by a small margin as 'LYF rose from 5th to 4th.

UNIVISION and SBS shared wins in the Spanish world, although shares of most Spanish music stations were off in the FALL. UNIVISION and SBS saw CLEAR CHANNEL evolve Latin Urban WMGE into a Spanish Contemporary station in 2007 and also splinter the shares a bit. Here's how each station looked:

Both CC Country WKKT and CBS rival WSOC grew in this cell after being tied in the SUMMER. WKKT moved up to 4th, while WSOC is now fifth, giving CBS four of the top five. WNOW-FM surged from 16th to 7th here and was up 150%.
25-54: In the all important 25-54 cell, CBS completely dominated. Their cluster landed five of the top-six stations. WBAV was #1 by a huge margin with WSOC at #2. WNKS held on to 3rd place. WKKT vaulted from 9th to 4th and was CLEAR CHANNEL's highest-rated station 25-54. CBS AC WKQC dipped from 4th to 5th, but remained ahead of CC rival WLYT. For the most part, it wasn't really a good book for AC (very rare for the FALL). LINCOLN FINANCIAL (soon to be GREATER MEDIA) Hot AC WLNK slipped from #6 to #13 25-54 this book. Also sliding considerably is CLEAR CHANNEL Classic Rock WRFX, which fell from 2nd to 9th.
Cleveland: WDOK Rides Santa's Sleigh To #1 25-54; RADIO ONE Scores 18-49 Win
CBS AC WDOK rode CHRISTMAS music to a #1 ranking among adults 25-54 in the FALL. WDOK moved up from 6th in the SUMMER. The station also tied for 1st place a year ago. WDOK knocked RADIO ONE Urban AC WZAK out of the market leading position 25-54, as WZAK slipped to 2nd.
RADIO ONE continued their strong performance in CLEVELAND, as WZAK and Urban sister WENZ were among the market leaders. WENZ was #1 18-34 and 18-49, while 'ZAK ranked 2nd 18-49 and 4th 18-34.
CLEAR CHANNEL performed stronger 25-54, but was shut out of the top 5 18-49. Here's a look at CLEVELAND's leaders by demo (in descending order):
18-34: WENZ, WKRK (CBS-Alternative), WAKS (CLEAR CHANNEL-Top 40), WZAK, WMMS (CLEAR CHANNEL-Rock), WQAL (CBS-Hot AC), a tie between WNCX (CBS-Classic Rock) and WDOK, WMJI (CLEAR CHANNEL-Classic Hits), WGAR (CLEAR CHANNEL-Country).

SACRAMENTO: ENTERCOM Rockers Rule; "JACK" Soars; KBMB Beats KSFM
ENTERCOM's Rock-formatted stations took the key top demo slots in SACRAMENTO. Rock KRXQ vaulted from 4th to 1st 18-34 and 2nd to 1st 18-49. Meanwhile, Classic Rock sister KSEG remained the market leader with adults 25-54. KRXQ also finished 3rd in the cell as well.
CBS Adult Hits outlet KQJK (JACK-FM) soared from 11th to 2nd 25-54 this book -- growing 66% from the SUMMER and 20% from a year ago. JACK also surged 12th to 5th 18-49. Sister AC KYMX (3rd to 7th) and Hot AC KZZO (5th to 12th) both took major dips this book -- possibly due to the growth of former CLEAR CHANNEL KGBY, which went all-CHRISTMAS and climbed from 13th to 6th. KGBY shifted to a gold-based Hot AC approach after the FALL book.
ENTRAVISION Rhythmic KBMB knocked off CBS rival KSFM in the 18-34 and 18-49 cells. KBMB moved 3rd to 2nd 18-34 and 4th to 2nd 18-49, as KSFM slipped from 1st to 3rd 18-34 and stayed in 3rd place 18-49.
CLEAR CHANNEL's two Talk stations got a bit closer this book. Heritage KFBK slipped from 2nd to 4th while sister KSTE vaulted from 14th to 5th 25-54.
SACTOWN's Country shares eroded more this book. CBS heritage outlet KNCI ranked 10th 25-54, while ENTRAVISION rival KNTY dropped from a tie for 18th to 21st. The total Country shares in the marketplace are down 14% from a year ago -- when KNCI was 4th.
