1. What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and to stay motivated?
High-quality drugs and look at my incoming bills.
2. How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Taking programming, website, promotional and social media notes from radio stations in other countries. America used to be the gold standard for radio. Now, I'm seeing radio abroad rise above us on many levels, which the U.S. can easily meet and beat! Late this month I will be meeting with some PDs in one these countries to share thoughts on our differences and ways to improve a station's brand.
Otherwise, hanging with family, friends, helping others search for their next radio challenge, and avoiding anything that would make my only menu choices jail food.
3. Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
Many PDs/Content-Brand Directors are the busiest they've ever been in their career, just trying to keep their respective ships smoothly sailing. Respect their overload of responsibilities, make sure your presentation offers more than prerequisites, and ... be p-a-t-i-e-n-t.
4. Do you plan on sticking with radio?
Yeah, I'm like non-stick cooking spray, and have no plans of going away.
5. What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
Two years of downward-dog. Fortunately, I was doing voiceover sessions and lap-dances for cash paying senior citizens with vision issues. Wish they could have kept their dentures in when laughing!
6. What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
Gently kick a hole in it! Pay your dues! Starting at the top will not happen, especially when taking into consideration the talent pool of pros currently on the beach, with plenty of lotion, and polished presentations quickly in reach.
7. What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
All Access! Plus, posting videos on my social media of me yodeling, buck-naked, to Eastern Indian music. Most are concerned about the mental damage I could be causing to viewers and want me back to semi-normal, ASAP.
8. What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
The PD was looking for a second banana (sidekick to his morning show personality). So, I sent him bananas, my aircheck and resume. Didn't work, but he enjoyed a free and handy snack.
9. What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
Classic Hits, Hot AC, AC, Urban AC, Top 40 or Country PM drive, middays, mornings or nights, here or abroad. Or a game show host in L.A. Hey, I live to PLAY!
10. Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
Some pleasantly surprising. Others not. Fortunately, there are at least two well-known and respected smaller companies, with major and large market stations, which they are investing in and often paying talent above the current average. That, is refreshing to know.
